After reading some online reviews, we had pretty low expectations when we booked this hotel. This was compounded by multiple emails from the hotel asking us to confirm in writing that we understood that it was a one-star hotel and that the room was 'internal' and 'dark'. We were very pleasantly surprised! The check in was smooth, and our room...

About 5 minutes walk from Rialto water bus station, location is near to attractions (e.g. Rialto bridge/Grand Canal), shops and restaurants. There was a view of a little canal from our window. The room is very spacious and clean, free wifi is provided. Note: not advisable for people with heavy luggages to stay here as there are no elevators and...

Five minutes walk from St Mark's Square, less than half that from the Rialto. I defy anyone to find a better located hotel than that in Venice. We have been visiting the Caneva every autumn for nearly ten years and would not dream of staying anywhere else. We always ask for the same room, no. 30, which has its own...

Great location to access from Rialto water bus station. Easy to check in and show to the room. Simple room with all you need for a few nights in Venice. No air con but not required for the month of September. Shower was good and bed was what you expect for the price.

Recently married young couple traveling on honeymoon tour, we were satisfied with our expectations. The hostel is an old building and needs updating but such is the life in city. The room was clean but smelt of cigarette smoke. Our window faced into the canals which was fun but not much view. Staff were pleasant. Location is the key here...

Location is excellent, just a 5 minute walk to Rialto. We had a quad room which was spacious but that's all you could praise about it really. No fridge, we had to use a communal one in the lobby. Supposed to have a shower but it was just a bath and a hand held shower! made having a shower a...

I don't know how anyone with eyes, a nose, and any sense of hygienic pride can give this place a good rating. First of all the hotel website and all of our booking reservations listed the checkin time as 8am. I thought this was kind of odd, however I was excited that we could get off of our sleeper train...

Booked a room at the Hotel Caneva the day of our arrival in Venezia and received a twin room overlooking the canal for just over 200 euros for 3 nights. It's a 1 star hotel which seems a little unfair; I think the rating comes from the distinctly hostel-vibe: shared bathrooms, Wifi and lounge areas. The location is superb. 5...

We stayed here as part of our interrailing trip around Italy. The location is extremely central, the hotel is clean and reception is open until 1am making it perfect for a short haul stay. The hotel feels very hostel-like but if you are looking for a budget stay in Venice then you can work past this. A lot of people...

This hotel is in a good location, only 5-10 minutes from Saint Marc's square and near shops, cafes and restaurants. The people at the desk were friendly and able to speak English. The rooms and bathroom were clean. Our only negative was that the floor of our room was on a slant and the bed was not overly comfortable. The...

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
