Good hotel advice for Venice is to avoid the big central San Marco and Grand Canal hotels, unless you are not worried about the cost and expect to be waited on hand and foot in luxury surroundings. This hotel has none of that, but it was still a good place to stay and good value for money. It is in...

We spent a long weekend in Venice. Our room was behind the hotel reception in another building which isn't a problem, but the wifi didn't stretch to our room very well and my own 3G didn't work in the building so internet was very slow. The room itself was clean and has beautiful Venetian furniture/decorations. The sound proofing however was...

This hotel was a good value for the money. Room was clean and comfortable. Not many extras, internet didn't work at all. Good location, but just a little ways away from main tourist spot so quiet. anywhere In Venice doesn't take too long to walk to so no issues there. For what you pay, good value, just know what to...

Stayed for 3 nights early December. The hotel is in a great location- just off the main drag of things but still centrally located. The hotel itself....... well we weren't expecting 5 stars so I guess we got what we paid for....... kind of. We booked a superior room- it was clean and comfortable but the bathroom had the most...

Stayed here for a few nights. The staff were really friendly, the room was out of the way but conveniently located near the main shops. The room was well furnished, and very clean. I really enjoyed my stay here and would definitely recommend coming here.

Hotel Al Vagon is well located not far from the Rialto bridge, our room was clean, comfortable and overlooking the canal. Decorated in typical Venetian style, there was nothing to distinguish our room from one costing twice the price. Staff were friendly and available 24 hours. Really can't fault it at all.

Chose this hotel following a search on Google Earth and booked a superior double room with canal view (single occupancy) for three nights in early October. Good central location near the Rialto Bridge. When I checked in I was taken to another building which backed on to the hotel and shown my room. Obviously the hotel's meaning of "superior" and...

Nice little boutique hotel in a great location. 5 minutes walk to Rialto, 15 max to St Marks Book a superior room with canal view- well worth the extra They don't do breakfast but there are loads of decent places within 2 minutes' walk Very clean, good beds and bedding. Free wifi. Well appointed bathrooms Would stay again without hesitation...

My girlfriend and I stayed at the Al Vagon for my birthday for three nights in early October. We were aware the hotel was basic as it only has 1 star, but the price was reasonable. We upgraded to a canal view room. The hotel is small, with a very small lobby and narrow winding corridor, but easy to navigate....

My partner and I stayed at the Hotel Al Vagon for 3 nights. For a 1 star hotel, it was perfectly adequate and good value for money, by Venice standards. It is centrally located and the main attractions are very close by and has a good selection of bars/restaurants within walking distance. The rooms are small but Venetian buildings are...

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighbourhood Profile
Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
