Nice and quiet family run hotel, very close to San Marco square (approx 5 mins walk). Friendly staff (all speak excellent English). Rooms a bit old fashioned - but clean and somehow the style adds to the "real" Italian experience; nice and warm (in March); fresh towels every day. Basic continental style breakfast, cute little bar area behind reception (very...

A quiet Hotel situated near San Zacharia square. I couldnt have wished for a better stay. Room was immaculately clean, towels on tap, none of this rubbish of saving towels to be green. The staff were wonderfully warm and friendly and breakfast more than adequate, I would have to give this hotel 10 out of 10. The owners are very...

I have stayed at Hotel Fontana for holidays over the past 20 years, and many times twice yearly. That in itself would be the highest recommendation. I previously stayed in Venice hotels where I was treated as merely a client. I then discovered the Fontana where the staff are genuinely concerned that your stay at the hotel and in Venice...

Couldn't fault a thing. Stayed 4 nights this feb. Staff were helpful, polite and welcoming. Rooms were clean and modern and very comfortable and warm in winter. Shower was hot and powerful with complimentary toiletries. i got a chance to look at the palace opposite which they use as overflow rooms and it's absolutely beautiful, the restoration is lovely and...

Hi, I just wanted to send a big thank you to the Hotel Fontana, Venice. My two adult children and I arrived a few days after the New Year. This hotel is very accessible from the train station. You just get the regular ferry service and it is a two minute walk once you alight from the vessel. The staff...

We stayed here for 4 nights over New Year; I initially booked two rooms, a double and a twin, but when we arrived they had given us 2 singles and a double which suited our teenagers perfectly. It's a great spot; an easy walk from the water and St. Mark's Square; there's also a great restaurant (Roberto's) just across the...

The Hotel is max five minutes from San Zacharia boat stop. We got the water taxi from the airport for €15 each way. We found it the easiest way to get there. When you get off the boat the small street is right in front of you. It is also only about 5-10 minutes easy walk to St Marks Square....

We recently visited Venice and stayed here. The location was excellent, the staff were very friendly and rooms were amazing value for money. I had proposed to my girlfriend in the afternoon and told the guy on reception after he'd asked us 'how our day was'. 5 minutes later a knock on the bedroom door and the receptionist greeted us...

Stayed at the Hotel Fontana in late September. The location is perfect. Five minutes from St. Marks and the grand canal. About three minutes from the water taxi stop. Used the water taxi from the cruise ship area and to the airport. Easy and at a reasonable price. The hotel has lots of restaurants in the area and shopping all around....

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
