As usual Trip Advisor members' reviews were spot on. we were very glad we picked this one. It's a great place that looks like it did in Victorian times but with modern-day conveniences. Although we had to move rooms after the first night because of some work being done, they had told us before we arrived and they moved our...

We stayed at the Pensione Calcina in Dorsoduro for the final two nights of a 4-night visit to Venice (our first) having spent the first two nights in the Cannaregio district, and the difference in these two sestieri is marked. As for La Calcina, it is splendidly located on the Zattere waterfront at the south-eastern tip of the Dorsoduro sestiere....

This is a great place, great location and very cute. The location is a short walk to the main attractions but nice and easy to find. Also very easy access to the 'water bus' system. The rooms were very cute but stairs only. The breakfast included was ok but the we ate dinner out on the deck and it was...

My husband and I stayed in Pensione La Calcina for four nights in Feb and we loved it! Great location - overlooking the Giudecca Canal (ask for a room with a canal view), in the Dorsoduro area, quieter than the San Marco area, it's a university area, it's close to Peggy Guggenheim musuem and only a 10 min walk to...

My wife, 12 year old daughter and I really enjoyed our stay at the Rosa apartment at La Calcina in Venice. It was a nice change from a hotel room and a great location. I highly recommend it.

Found La Calcina listed in our favourite guide Lonely Planet and it sounded good and was available. What a lucky find. Everything about this little hotel was superb, beautiful to look at, meticulously clean and shining, lovely staff, a brilliant restaurant attached where we had breakfast, great coffee, and several delicious meals. Service here too was excellent. We especially liked...

My wife and I recently stayed at La Calcina for three nights and chose this location because of the past reviews. Our expectations were fulfilled after spending some time in the hotel. The room was nothing fancy, but if you are spending more time in your room than walking around you might want to look for a different vacation. Venice...

My wife and I searched many hotels in which to stay and celebrate our 3rd wedding anniversary. This was our first visit to Italy and we can honestly say that our stay at La Calcina was wonderful in every aspect. The smell of the hotel was delightful the moment you entered the front door, and this continued into the bedrooms...

My husband & I thoroughly enjoyed our recent stay at Pensione La Calcina. We had a lovely room with a great view (I booked it in February!). We took advantage of their special 3 course dinner menu for hotel guests, and it was the best dinner of our entire two week trip- truly outstanding. We would have eaten at their...

I have been to Venice many times & have stayed in a number of different hotels - mostly in Dorsoduro, which is the quietest & nicest part of the city. This is the first - & certainly not the last - time I have stayed at La Calcina. It is perfect in almost every respect: not only its position but...

Thank you for your very nice and humorous review. We have hardly the time to read italian newspapers thus we do not read the british ones. Some years ago a very dear guest of us suggested that we had the Independent in our lobby. Afterwards a number of british guests said that the Independent wasn't a british representative newspaper. Thus...

Staying in Dorsoduro / Accademia

Neighbourhood Profile
Dorsoduro / Accademia
Artsy is the defining mood of this neighbourhood with street artists, students, painters, sculptors, restorers, curators, historians, collectors, heirs and heiresses rubbing elbows. Peggy Guggenheim's collection, now a museum, lures chic locals for evening art aperitifs. Traditionalists and visionaries cocoon in bohemian luxury. La Salute basilica buttresses the neighbourhood to the east. Gondolas bob in the morning light. The Accademia Bridge crosses the Grand Canal. A back street doubles as basketball court. Palaces house residents, or like Ca' Foscari a university, or a museum like Ca’ Rezzonico that attracts Venetians for concerts. Dorsoduro reveals its industrial roots too, in buildings converted to house university departments or exhibitions. Campo Santa Margherita bursts with youthful energy from local students. Foot traffic bustles to and from Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia train station. Evening commuters pause for an aperitivo. Neighbours exchange confidants in a campo (square) on their way to market.
