Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.

We spent two nights here. Friendly service, great location and a really good breakfast. The rooms are described as ‘intimate’ or in plain speak - tiny, but everything necessary is there and we had a great stay. Short walk to St Marks square and the centre of Venice. Will easily

Good hotel, had an elevator, very close to st macros square, breakfast was good. Best part is that it’s close to the water, water taxi takes you very close to the hotel, don’t need to cart the luggage around the island.

We saw this hotel in a Rick Steves review and opted to stay one night because he liked it a lot. I will never trust his judgement again. We arrived by water taxi and tried to follow directions to the hotel. It was only a block away, but we had to ask three times for directions

Dear stevesol6718, we are sorry to know you were not fully satisfied with your experience at Hotel Campiello but we need to make some points clearer, since there are a few omissions in your version of the facts. First of all, our hotel is really, really close to the waterbus stop; we find it actually hard to imagine that you had to ask three times for directions (and that you could not find the hotel also after the check-in…). With regards to the child crying at night, the receptionist asked you whether you had told it to the reception or not and you answered that probably the reception could not have done anything about it. We actually could have at least talked to the guests of that room. However, if you were so sure we could not do anything about it, why complaining? We would also like to highlight that the receptionist reported you answered in an inappropriate way, interrupting her while she was following other guests' check-out. Those same guests noticed your manners. The day of your departure the reception suggested every guest to leave early in order to avoid the water, but you preferred to wait until the last minute. You asked for a porter (service not included in our hotel) and we called for one, but you then cancelled it and walked away to check the way to the boat, leaving your big luggage in the middle of the hall, where other guests were trying to complete their check-out. We would like to conclude by pointing out two more things: one is that Campiello is a 3* hotel featuring many services, but the Law prevents us from taking our guests to the pier: that is what designed porters in Venice are for. Plus, our receptionist was alone when you were leaving: even if she wanted, there was nothing she could have done to help you. The second thing is that your room was small because that is what you have chosen to book: all the details about the hotel, the services, the rooms, are listed in our website (and in the external web portals you can use to book at Campiello) in order to allow our guests to choose according to their needs and preferences. Plus, our small double rooms have all been renovated recently: the proof is again online, in our website, where we have uploaded all the most recent photos. We hope this could help clarify our position. Best regards, Hotel Campiello

Dear francesmcg12345, we are glad to know you had a good stay at Campiello, even though we are sorry to know you were not fully satisfied with it. With regards to room T, the one you stayed in, we can assure you it isn't attached to the kitchen or the breakfast room. In fact it borders only on two warehouses. The noises you heard probably have nothing to do with our hotel, however we apologise for the inconvenience. We also did not receive any emails during your stay. As far as our staff is concerned, they are polite and discreet; we are sorry if their manners may have seemed cold to you, but do not doubt we were really glad to welcome you. We look forward to having you again with us when you return to Venice, best regards, Hotel Campiello

The hotel refused to put the air conditioning on - they said that there was an Italian law that required them to turn off all a/c starting Nov 1 - even though we were there in October!! We asked other hotels and they all said that they all had a/c!. We couldn't open the windows

Dear Jo-Anne, we are sorry to know you were not satisfied with your experience at Hotel Campiello. First of all, we would like to highlight that all the information concerning heating and air conditioning is clearly specified in all the websites you can choose to book at Campiello. In particular, it is clearly written that air conditioning is available from 15th May to 30th September (and your holiday was booked for the middle of October). What actually happened is that you never really complained in person: you completed your check-in, just asked our receptionist if there was air conditioning and when you discovered it was not possible to turn it on you went back to your room and tried to cancel your check-in and booking through your booking website. After not being able to do it you just decided to leave the hotel, without letting us know why, without giving us the chance to provide you with any other solutions (a fan in your room, for example). When our staff asked you what was happening your only response was “you will read it from my online feedback”, which, in our opinion, is not really good manners. We also find it really difficult to understand how you could have killed so many mosquitoes, since you spent really little time in the room you booked (one hour, more or less). We understand people all have different habits about air conditioning and heating, that is why there is a specific period (written everywhere online) when we turn them on (obviously also according to the Italian law). In addition, the temperature during those days was actually quite cold, almost requiring us to turn on the heating, rather than the air conditioning. Furthermore, none of our other guests asked us to open the climatization We hope this could clarify our position in order to let you know that our staff simply followed the rules and that we would have been glad to try to find a solution for you. Best regards, Hotel Campiello

Dose the hotel provide free parking??
There is no vehicle access to the island. If you are driving you will need to park our vehicle on the mainland and then take a boat to the San Zaccaria boat stop. The hotel is a short walk from the boat stop. What they call streets are what we call alleys.

We are flying in to treviso- how easy is it to get to the hotel and what are the options?
We flew into the Venice airport. At the luggage pick up area, I noticed an area where I could purchase boat tickets for a boat to Venice (boat holds about 50 people) - small boat - you walk along a long hallway - down the escalator - stand in line and get on the next boat - for Hotel Campiello - you get off the boat at San Zacchario.

From the hotel what will I need to do for transportation to get to the airport for a 6:30 am flight? Thank you
I agree with JohnnyHan. Taking the vaporetto to the train station and then the bus to the airport would take a long time, if they even run at 3:30 or 4:30 am. Take a water taxi. It's pricey but exhilarating.
