This two star hotel was great. The staff was helpful and we had a room in their annex a few streets down. The room was quiet, faced an interior courtyard and had a sweet partial canopy bed. The air conditioning in the room worked very well, everything was clean and the neighborhood – Cannaregio – had great restaurants and some...

It was absolutely horrible!!!! We stayed only 1 night and that was enough for us to be completely covered in bed bug bites! The hotel was hard to find, there are no elevators (and the stairwell is tiny), and our entire backs were covered with bed bug bites after just one night! DO NOT STAY HERE!

This is not absolutely true! We have never had such a problem! We have been running this hotel for 25 years and cleanness has always been very important for us! And it is strange that after months that guess writes such a review! moreover no one has ever complained that while staying here!! Is that maybe a revenge for something?...

We traveled throughout Italy and Greece, and this is by far the worst place we stayed. The front desk people were very rude. They gave us a tiny room on the ground floor with a window that looked out to a tiny, ugly walkway. The room smelled. There were no bathrooms on the 1st floor, so we had to go...

One of the best places we stayed in during our entire Europe trip. Its rooms have a lovely, charming feel to it. The people at the reception desk were very helpful and offered great suggestions on how best to enjoy Venice. Great location and reasonable price.

It is hard to imagine a better value in Venice than the Bernardi. I've stayed twice, first last year in a single room by myself and most recently in late November in a double with my wife, and I was extremely pleased on both occasions. My friends -- one couple from Paris, the other from London -- also stayed in...

I took my two girls to Venice this Thanksgiving and wanted to find an inexpensive European hotel that was conveniently located, clean and a friendly place. That is just what we found in the Hotel Bernardi. Everyone was very friendly, the place was spotless, and it was in a perfect location. It was very inexpensive by Venetian standards. One of...

My husband and I traveled to Venice with my sister and brother-in-law in September. We found this hotel using trip advisor and Frommers. We were given rooms in the Annex which were quite lovely. The rooms and the bathrooms were very clean. The breakfast was the weakest amenity-and I have to say, (like the other reviews I read) the lady...

Bring your mosquito repellent if you are going when these critters are still alive. We were bitten nightly by the invasion of these mosquitoes. The breakfast is on the low end both for the type and freshness of food and presentation. I wanted another espresso and they told me they would bill me 2 euro for this! Apparently one shot...

Family of 4 travelling Europe June/July 07 spent 3 nights at the Hotel Bernardi. Booking was done via email and all the communication was prompt and efficient. Room of average standard - rather tired and old - but good to be able to accommodation 4 in one room. Good value for money for Venice standards. Bathroom clean but very small....

We stayed at Hotel Bernardi during the hot summer month of August. Thankfully, they had air conditioning, which kept the room cool. We were told we would have a small double bed to share, but were pleasantly surprised to have an extra twin bed in the room. The room was fairly large for this class of hotel/pensione. It had an...

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighbourhood Profile
Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
