This small boutique hotel is within 5 minutes from San Marco Square, looking out at the Grand Canal. Our second floor room had three large windows from which we could watch the multitude of tourists walking the promenade, many looking up to admire the beautifully kept flower boxes under each window. We could catch a vaporetto just 100 meters from...

This hotel is in an excellent location, very close to Piazza San Marco. Rialto is within walking distance too. It is right on the grand canal and the water taxi stops directly in front of the hotel. The staff are very friendly and helpful, breakfast is quite good and the restaurant is good too. A great place to sit for...

We spent four nights at Hotel Wildner in early May, 2006. The hotel is in an excellent location, and the staff is wonderful -- they helped with a water taxi, concerto tickets, and answered other questions with patience and charm. The airconditioning works well, and the windows effectively stop outside sounds. The price is reasonable even thought its position is...

I stayed two night at the Hotel Wildner. The hotel is small and a couple of doors down from the five star Danieli but has the same lagoon views as that expensive hotel. The room are basic, and I mean basic. The furniture is old. My room was not as nice as the room posted in photos, but it was...

We stayed at the Wildner for 2 nights from Fri, Sept 30th, 2005 onwards. The weather for the first weekend of October was really pleasant. We had wonderful sunshine and warm temperatures. We flew in from London - into Treviso airport. Contrary to what most people say, the bus ride from Treviso, through Mestre, to Piazzale Roma isn't that painful....

Early in September, my wife and I stayed 5 nights in a lagoon view room at the Hotel Wildner. Our room was very clean, well air-conditioned, had a room safe and what a terrific view (see photos taken from room windows). The Wildner's location could not be better. We walked everywhere in Venice and ended every night at St Mark's...

We booked (triple room 180 EUR per night) for four nights but checked out after only one, and really can't see why others rave about this hotel. Come on people! Surely it has seen better days and needs a makeover so that it doesn't look so shabby. Yes, it's a pensione, but that's no excuse for the generally poor standard...

A fine pensione in a remarkable location for families who want to be in the thick of things (AKA "Tourist Central"). The staff is friendly and generally knowledgeable. The website is accurate in its description. Which means guest should be aware that this IS a budget hotel in a luxury location. No lift. Virtually no lobby. Our superb Quad room...

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
