Everyone gets lost in Venice. So did we. We thought after getting of the Vapouretto, we could find our way. We ended up carrying our luggage up and down bridges, going around in circles. DO PRINT OUT A DETAILED MAP BEFORE YOU TRAVELLED. GPS DOESN'T WORK WELL HERE. It is the most expensive part of our Italian trip. But we...

Only challenge is dragging cases through the myriad of streets and over steps....especially when travelling with two mid 70 year olds. But find it we did and what a brilliant place. Stayed out of the main hotel and the annexe was very quiet and comfortable. We used public transport from airport which was a mistake. For the extra (and it...

We didn't know what to expect going to a city with so many independant hotels, but were pleasantly happy with our decision to go to Santa Marina. Not very far from San Marco square or Rialto bridge (around 10 mins walk). The rooms were extremely big for European standards and the beds were good if you like a firm mattress...

Our stay here was nothing special. The room felt a bit closterfobic and the bed was as hard as a rock. Also, the bathroom shower was designed for people under four feet tall. The positives: the location is pretty good, less then a 5 minute walk to the grand canal and main square, and it includes a decent breakfast.

While our visits to both Rome and Florence could not have been better, our stay at the Santa Marina was certainly the low point of our Italy vacation. We checked into room 501, which is on the ground floor of the hotel. The room was tucked behind the front desk. Our windows, which were described as having a "courtyard view",...

This is a great place with a clean room which was a bit small but very good size modern bathroom. There is a lovely sitting area with comfortable lounges to relax on, there are also lots of steps to the rooms which is a bit confusing to negotiate. Our room faced into an alleyway which was not so great, but...

I stayed at the Hotel Santa Marina with my husband during our honeymoon through Italy. It is definitely not the easiest place to find, what with Venice being a maze of alleys, but once we arrived we were extremely happy with the location, as it was close to everything, but far enough away from all the crowds. We were housed...

Our room in the annexe building was fairly large and comfortable with good amenities. Excellent modern bathroom. Unfortunately the bedroom lighting was very poor, making it quite dark and dingy. Biggest problem was the noise from overhead staff rooms. We were awoken every morning at about 5 a.m. by the sound of furniture in the room above us scraping across...

The hotel is perfectly located in the centre of San Marco, staff was friendly and very helpful. They provided us with maps and a couple of suggesstion. After check out they even offered to hold our luggage until our flight later that evening. They also offered to post our postcards and had the this charged to our room. The room was...

The initial service at the hotel was friendly, efficient and helpful and the standard of english was very good. The annexe, where we stayed, is obviously the budget side of the hotel, but it was very clean and attractive, though from what other guests had indicated, probably a little small compared to the hotel's website picture gallery. Well worth the...

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
