Stayed at this wonderful hotel with a group of people May 25-29, 2006 for my first visit to Venice. It is close to the train station, vaporetto stops, and private wter taxis; however, it is in a quiet area which transports you to peace and tranquility. A former monastery, it radiates warmth and comfort. Our room was small by American...

I think all the good about this hotel has been said and I can confirm it. The breakfast could improve, it opened a bit late, at 7.30 and the cappuccino offered wasn't so good. Otherwise, good room, friendly staff, good value and the inside garden is wonderful. If you have a room with a window on it you can wake...

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights May 23-25. We arrived in Venice by a long train ride from Nice, therefore we were grateful that the hotel is just a few steps away from the train station! We were greeted by a super friendly front desk staff who spoke perfect English. He also gave us a map and...

Having travelled from New Zealand and had had lots of most informative information via email we were pleased to meet the staff and see the hotel. We just loved it there and its close proximity to the railway station and waterways was a real bonus. Would highly recommend it to anyone. Staff were great too.

We spent 2 nights at the Abbazia Hotel before our Mediterranean cruise on the Grand Princess. I booked the hotel based on the reviews here in tripadvisor and we were not disappointed. The hotel was everything previous reviewers said it would be. The Abbazia rooms, common areas and grounds were immaculate. Our superior rooms were lovely with great bathrooms. The...

A group of 7 of us stayed at the Abbazia for 2 nights in May. When we first saw the tiny alleyway that led to the hotel we were very cautious, on entering the hotel we were very surprised and extremely pleased. This is a wonderful hotel, extremely clean and well looked after. The staff were very helpful and friendly...

Stayed in the Abbazia hotel for two nights in May 2006. Four of us in a group, one couple and one mother/teenage daughter. We all loved the hotel. As it was May you could choose to have your breakfast in the garden (courtyard type) or indoors. The breakfast was european standard but quiet good. Both our rooms were beautifully decorated...

I found this hotel in a Frommer's guidebook while planning my trip, and I booked it because of it's proximity to the train station. I was traveling with my mom, and I knew I couldn't drag her luggage and mine all over Venice. We were pleasantly surprised to find that our standard double room had been upgraded upon our arrival....

In Venice, you do not want to be bothered with lugging around luggage up and down stairs over canal bridges. This hotel is a 5 mintue walk from the train station. No need to take the vaporetto or to cross any bridges. The hotel is quiet. You never hear noise from the trains. It is just off a main shopping...

This hotel was perfect as a base to see Venice. After a long train ride, my family and I didn't want to lug our suitcases all over the hard to naviage streets of Venice. This hotel is right next to the train station down a very charming little street - so small, you may pass it right by! The service...

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighbourhood Profile
Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
