In my 50 years of travelling. this was the WORST hotel I ever stayed in. They did not mention that there was no elevator. My room had windows that opened into an airshaf.t There was no one to speak with. The staff has limited English. The room looked like a large coffin and given the lack of windows., The breakfast... Overall, we enjoyed this hotel; beautiful décor and rooms. No elevator, so be prepared for stairs. We had a canal view room on the second floor. Enjoyed the views, but if you're not prepared for some background noise from boats in the canal as early as 6 am, then reserve a room away from the canal. Good refrigerator and Internet.... More

We stayed here for a night. We took airport vaporetto to reach San Marco stop and ten we had to walk with our luggage through the narrow lanes of Venice. From outside it looks very cozy.Main problem: they do not have any lift! And you have to carry your own luggage to your floor. The room is very very small, same applies to... More

Our stay: 4th Nov night to 6th Nov morning. Location : It is quite close to all the important places in Venice. Avoid to reach the hotel during the night. We experienced difficulty in locating the hotel..Of course, Venice is like that with small lanes. Staff: ALL THE STAFF MEMBERS WERE VERY FRIENDLY AND COURTEOUS Amenities: The hotel has to... More

The key thing about this hotel is its location. You can stroll easily to many of the attractions in Venice, and for those that you cannot walk to, the water bus stop is a 5 minute walk. As others have said, our room was small, but adequate. Not enough space to put cases for 2 adults anywhere other than on... More

Located in a lovely old building full of marble and antiques. Including the plumbing and hot water system must be at least a few hundred years old. Not enough water pressure for a shower and it took two hours to fill the bathtub. The rooms are quite small and inadequately appointed, with hard beds and an odor that cannot be... More

The Ateneo is an old fashioned, traditional hotel which is perfectly situated; it is a mere 10 minutes walk from both St Mark's Square and the Rialto Bridge. The staff were friendly and welcoming and the rooms were spotlessly clean. A continental breakfast is also included in the price which provided a good choice and was fresh and plentiful (and... We stayed three nights in this hotel. Gentlemen at front desk on arrival was helpful. Room was small but enuff room for a family. One issue was no lift but its an old venetian building. Our room looked out to the little courtyard. Breakfast was ok not alot of choice and a bit squeezy. Could do with an update of... More

Just spent a day here before catching a cruise. I try and give everyone the benefit of the doubt. Weigh out the pros and cons. Put myself in their shoes. But there was one staff member that was so RUDE that the hotel deserves a bad review. I want to make sure I justly review this... Front desk staff at... More

We stayed in Hotel Ateneo for one night in June and it was just perfect. The rooms are quite small, but very romantic and decorated beautifully. Breakfast in the morning was great with a wide selection of food. The hotel is near several major attractions, so it suited us well. We would definitely return if we were in Venice in... More

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The building is historic and was once the residence of well-to-do merchants’ families. It was fitted out as a hotel in 1959, by the noble Sereni family, and extends over 4 floors, a typical period feature, facing onto the wonderful canal "dei barcaioli," reserved for gondolas. Thanks to the full-scale restoration in 2002, the Ateneo Hotel has maintained the unspoiled charm of a typical seventeenth-century Venetian residence. ... more   less
