I stayed at the Istituto San Guiseppe for three nights. The accommodation is relay well located - five minutes to Saint Marks Square and five minutes to Rialto. It is clean, quiet and the ensuite room was a really good size. You do have to be in by 10.30. There is a only a coffee machine for refreshments but there...

I stayed here for 6 nights in April, having booked directly with the Istituto (I believe it is also possible to book via Monastery Stays, if you prefer). I had no trouble booking directly - I emailed the Istituto via their website and got a very prompt response, and they were equally helpful when I needed to change the dates...

We stayed here for five nights in April, having booked on recommendations of friends - directly with bookingmonastery - it is pointless trying to book this place any other way...they do not work. The accommodation fits within a working monastery AND a primary school, so guests have to be absolutely committed to a cooperative, low demand, frame of mind...something I...

We stayed for four days at the monastery. Our room consisted of three single beds and a good size bathroom. The AC in the room was just adequate. There is a kitchen area with a refrigerator and a microwave for guests. Note: there is a curfew and you must hand in keys when you leave. The location was very nice...

This convent still has 7 nuns, who run an infant school in the mornings. Otherwise, your main contact is the receptionist, a lay person, who is extremely friendly and helpful in providing advice on where to eat, etc. The Common Room downstairs is quite basic, but has a kitchen area where you can eat, make hot drinks and use the...

Right in the middle of all the Venice sights, the Istituto San Giuseppe is an oasis in the midst of all the excitement. Located in a centuries old convent that today serves as a school, guest house and home for the nuns who serve there, the Istutio offers a very quiet place to stay less than 1,000 feet from St....

The location was perfect for everything we wanted to do. We felt safe and secure and were comfortable leaving our belongings in the room. The people at the front desk were extremely helpful. We had a three night stay and I would definitely plan to stay there the next time we visit Venice - perfect location once you figure out...

I enjoyed my stay here for four nights. It's all you expect from a convent/monastery stay: clean, quiet and safe. I slept very well. Don't expect North American hotel amenities at these prices. (i.e. Bring your own shampoo and blow dryer.) There are plenty of places to eat nearby, including a greengrocer and a grocery store, as well as numerous...

We stayed here for three nights from 24th April. Istituto Giuseppe is centrally located between Rialto Bridge and San Marco. It was hard to find initially. We took the boat no 2 but because it was raining we had problems finding it. But once there, we were able to get our bearings right. The rooms were very clean. The Sisters...

2 min walk to Saint Mark's Square (if you don't get lost)!! Sisters were lovely and welcoming. Our room was much larger than expected and a large ensuite too. Mattresses were very comfy. Unfortunately there were many mosquitos in the room (had to sleep under the sheets) however by the second night there was only one and I got a...

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
