We decided to spend a night in Venice during our jaunt in Italy because, hey: that's what you do! You go to Venice! You see the canals! Just do it! So, we did. Except imagine my horror when I looked at summer hotel prices throughout Venice. Good lord: hundreds of dollars for hotels with abysmal reviews. Now, I knew going...

The check in was not actually at the apartment, so we had to haul our luggage through Venice to get to get to the reception (we didn't get an e-mail or anything warning us), Room was average and small for the price we paid.

Had a lovely stay here, easy to find with printed maps from their website. I read some past reviews mentioning it was tricky to find but this is not a problem when you prepare your route before. The hotel staff who ran residents Favaro were extremely friendly and helpful. Perfect location!

Perfect for the price and location. Certainly no frills but small, clean and air worked well during the Italian heatwave we endured. The breakfast and staff at Hotel Dell 'Opera were first class. Great spot.

Judging from the pictures, this hotel looks like a dream. Reality isn't as great. We arrived in Venice with heavy backpacks in almost unbearable heat, and spent forever trying to figure out where to actually check in. The hotel was in a narrow alley (and then I mean narrow by Venetian standards - I could hardly turn around in there...

Going by the pictures on the hotel's website we were looking forward to staying at this hotel but this all changed when we walked into our room. We had a ground floor room which smelt of damp and there was not much natural daylight so room was dark and dismal and did not look like hotel rooms advertised. We did...

A late review! I thought I had done this. Clean room, brilliant location very easy to find following the directions on their site. The only difficulty was the stairs. If you struggle with mobility this place and anywhere in Venice will be a hard work. Hard Rock Cafe and McDonald's provide edible food, many of the restaurants are poor and...

What an excellent find this little hotel is. Only 5 minutes walk from St Marks Square and so clean, extremely good value. Check in is at another hotel close by. No reception at Residenza which was not a problem. A lot of stairs to our top floor room but again no problem for us. Would happily recommend and would love...

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
