Stayed at the Ruzzini Palace hotel from 18-21 March with my husband for our wedding anniversary. The most efficient (and less pricey) way to get from the airport is the Alilaguna boat service (orange/arancia line) which goes directly to the Rialto stop and is only an 8 min walk to the Ruzzini Palace. That said, be prepared to get lost...

We managed to choose 4 days of Venice's wettest and foggiest weather (the Sirocco caused the Grand Canal to overflow into the canal-side restaurants at one point!). However, our spirits were not dampened, thanks to the opulent and luxurious surroundings of the Paradiso Suite, which we were lucky enough to be upgraded into. From our balcony we could watch daily...

When we arrived we were booked into a classic room - this was on the ground floor next to the reception and wasn't really what we were expecting. We upgraded (at a charge) to a junior suite, which was much more like it. Four poster bed, tall ceilings, intricate artwork and great views out onto Campo Santa Maria Formosa. The...

The Ruzzini Palace is absolutely superb. It has such a wonderful feel to it – oldie worldie embracing modern comforts. The staff – all of them – were very professional, friendly and helpful; they really enhanced our stay - Venice is such a confusing place you need a helping hand and recommendations every so often. We had one of the...

This is a lovely hotel. Centrally located it’s easy to find, once you know how to find it! The first time it’s trial and error down the alleyways from the Rialto Bridge. But that’s half the fun. Once there a warm, welcome awaits from the front desk staff who all speak English. The room was spotlessly clean and the bed...

The Ruzzini Palace will blow you away as you walk through the square up to the hotel. Once we arrived we were greeted by Francesco at the front desk who was very welcoming and such a nice person. Francesco surprisingly upgraded us to a suite which overlooked the entire square. I am not a frequent traveler but will take at...

We stayed at the Ruzzini Palace during the Venice International Film Festival (where our son had a short film accepted for screening). Our room was spacious, quiet, and very comfortable. The staff were extremely helpful in recommending restaurants, things to do, and how to get to places. Breakfasts were excellent. The location was great (very quiet and close enough to...

Venice, in general, is expensive and a big tourist trap. We got charged EURO100 for a fresh sea bass one night at a restaurant in Venice. It is also the only city in Italy we visited to charge a heavy service charge (13-20%) to the bill when dinning in restaurants. The water taxi wanted EURO60 from the Venice train station...

Plus: Dramatic rooms tastfully decorated Position Super tasty croissants Excellent common areas Minus: Cleaning can be improved. Small rooms are not so nice

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
