Trastevere was our favourite part of Rome, idyllic and bustling with lovely shops, cafes and trattoria's. We travelled on foot to every major sight from the B&B, but we were always keen to return to the trastevere for our evening meal. All of the staff at Residenza are extremely helpful and knowledgeable - especially when it comes to eating out....

This is the second time that we have stayed here, for the Wales - Italy rugby match. It is just perfect. The rooms are clean and warm. The staff are just wonderful, nothing is too much trouble. The breakfast is good and the service is first class. The area in which the hotel is located is great for a weekend....

We really enjoyed our stay in Residenza Santa Maria. The location is perfect, as it is very central but on a quiet little street. Trastevere-area is full of lovely little restaurants, and it was really easy to find places to eat at nights. The hotel is only a walking distance from all the major sights, and what better way to...

I stayed at this hotel for 3 nights in Feb. It is a beautiful hotel in the heart of Trastevere. The room was spacious and clean. The bathroom was well equiped and clean. The people at reception were warm and helpful. They helped us with the booking at Uffizi and Vatican. They almost planned our three days at Rome. The...

Lovely friendly hotel in a great location. Right around the corner from Santa Maria Trastevere church (well worth a visit) and very handy for restaurants. We walked everywhere - Colosseum (40 mins), Vatican (30 mins) and all the other central sights. Great breakfast (bread, pastries, croissants, ham, cheese, cereals, fruit, yogurts and good hot scrambled eggs). I'm afraid I didn't...

I've been to hotels that failed to live up to expectations, but I was extremely pleased to find that Residenza Santa Maria did live up to what I hoped. As other reviewers have noted, the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. There were a couple of minor issues with the room when I first arrived that were dealt with quickly...

In the core of Trastevere, rounded by joyful and young romans, this hotel is quiet, with good accommodations and very friendly service. In few minutes, by walking, you are in the center of Rome or in the old Rome. It was a pleasure to stay there (5 days).

I couldn't ask for a more warm, friendly and accommodating staff on my first visit to Rome. I was so comfortable, it felt like being with family. My room was clean, serene and quiet. I slept in my first morning (jet lag effects I guess), and after I prepped for the day I walked out to the front desk. I...

Staying in Trastevere

Neighbourhood Profile
Trastevere ("beyond the Tiber") is like a faded postcard, a little worn around the edges but still charming. With its wide-open piazzas, meandering streets, weathered Renaissance buildings, and overgrown personality, it's become an irresistible mecca for visitors. Trastevere is an enclave of entertainment - a rotating set of street performers entertains almost every night, and unforgettable eateries and bars pepper its piazzas and side streets. For a trip to the past, visit the southern and western flanks of Trastevere for pockets of yesteryear, less traversed areas with a residual 1960s and 70s Roman vibe.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Residenza San Calisto ( previously know Residenza Santa Maria), is a small exclusive Hotel de charme, located I the heart of Rome, just a stone's from the magnificent and picturesque square of Santa Maria in Trastevere. This boutique Hotel is the result of the skilful restoration of a 17th century building. The whole house is dominated by brick arches, wooden ceilings, artistic hand painted frescos and wall decorations which give to the Residenza Santa Maria an atmosphere of refined elegance. With only 6 rooms, the Residenza Santa Maria is somewhat smaller than its namesake which allows for even greater atmosphere, notwithstanding the fact that having only recently opened it is also equipped with high tech environment. The large and quite, no smoking, rooms, some of which family rooms, are fully equipped with private bathroom with tub and shower, A/C, telephone, mini-bar, safe, satellite flat panel TVs, free internet connection, boiler for tea/coffee and other amenities. In the breakfast room, once a Roman cistern of the II cen. BC, decorated by original ancient Roman artifacts found on site during restoration of the building, guests can enjoy a rich and delicious buffet breakfast, (scramble or boiled eggs, ham, cheese, salami, fresh bread, assortment of biscuits, cakes, fresh fruits, yogurt, fresh croissants, selection of fruit juices etc.). Thanks to great location, from the Residenza Santa Maria, guests can easily reach the main tourist sites like Campo de' Fiori, Navona Square, the Pantheon, Spanish Steps, Trevi's fountain, the Roman Forum and Coliseum with just a relaxing stroll through a maze of fascinating medieval streets. The Vatican Museum/Sistine Chapel and St Peter's Square are a few minutes away. Furthermore Trastevere, apart from the beauty of its mediaeval narrow little streets, is filled with typical restaurants, markets, pubs and cafes. The Residenza Santa Maria also offers services like transfer to and from the airport, private guided tours, laundry service, shiatsu massage, beauty centre, baby sitting service and car and scooter hire, as well as offering free use of bikes to its personal guests. ... more   less
