Reviewed 16 October 2012

We spent 2 nights in the Sourire hotel. Considering the area is upscale with ambassador residencies etc nearby and a short walk from the center, the hotel was a right down disappointment. The receptionist was friendly enough but not very representative, nor did he offer to help with the luggage. The rooms were extremely basic with a bed that had an extra piece of wood wired to the base to support the bed from collapsing. Even though the sheets were clean, we ended up "rolling" into the middle of the bed because the mattress was so poor (you could feel the wiring through the fabric). The toilet seat lid was partly off its hinges and the shower cabinet doors were loose and way past their best-by date (now yellow, presumably white when installed). The breakfast was extremely poor and two other customers who had not pre-ordered were not served breakfast at all. After them waiting for 10 mins for service the waiter finally told them that "you have not pre-ordered breakfast... More

Staying in Aventine

Neighbourhood Profile
Aventine
Contrary to the chaos of the city, the Aventine is Rome’s oasis. A neighbourhood made up of a patchwork of ancient churches, hidden gardens, private homes and embassies, peace and quiet is top priority and the vibe definitely friends and family. Take a walk around the Aventine and you’ll find a treasure hunt of surprises like the clever little keyhole at the Knights of Malta entrance (the only place you’ll find a line) along with Parco Savello (Giardino degli Aranci) next to the ancient Santa Sabina church. Keep your eyes on the 1960s architecture, several modern buildings are built atop Rome’s original 4th century BC wall.
