We were two couples traveling on a package deal where our hotel was pre-selected for us. Although the hotel is located in a not so attractive part of Rome, we never felt unsafe. It is a quaint authentic style Italian hotel. The hotel is located near two train lines including Termini station which made it super easy to get anywhere without a rental car. The front desk staff is extremely helpful and pleasant. It is an odd set up as we had to leave the hotel to go next door to enter our rooms. We were lucky to get two side by side rooms. Our room had a small balcony which would probably be wonderful if we were there in nicer weather. It was quite chilly in February. The bed was comfortable and our room came with a small refrigerator, small closet and a safe. It was decorated nicely and super clean. The bathroom is small as the toilet was so close to the sink that you had to twist to the side to use it. Not a huge deal. The hotel is also near a fantastic restaurant - 320 Gradi, nearby gelato and a grocery store for some great wine! There was a continental breakfast every morning that was simply croissants, popovers and a pastry with cold cereal and fruit. The servers are very attentive. Nothing fancy but it gets you started for the day. We would definitely stay here again. Oh, and the best part was that when we arrived at 9:30 a.m after a long overnight flight, we were able to check in catch a quick nap. …
Hotel was comfortable and desk personal were very helpful. Near subway system so easy to get around. Only real downside is the breakfast. Dry little and not good for a diabetic as all starches. Coffee is the worst I ever have had, no flavor at all.
We stayed here while on our trip to Rome. The hotel and rooms are very quaint an comfortable. They have a continental breakfast that consists of a basket of two croissants and two other types of rolls with jelly and butter. They also had cold cereal, like corn flakes, and some kind of tart. The coffee was very good! I thought it was a little odd but you have to turn in your key and retrieve it every time you leave and return for day trips. There are no wash clothes for showering. Our room had a small balcony that was nice but since it was February it was too cold to take advantage of it. Overall we were very satisfied.
(The 5 star is comparing apples to apples- thus 5* rating for a 3* dedicated Hotel) This is my second stay at Hotel Donatello. After staying in Trastevere our last trip, I missed Donatello, the welcoming desk staff/owners, my fave restaurant and gelateria nearby, and the terrific location, so I returned for this trip with my middle son. The staff is always friendly and helpful, replied to my email room request promptly, and just really tries hard to please. We were given the room across the hall, 4th floor (5th in America) from my last stay since it was an exact match but a double twin instead of 1 double bed. It is a corner room which means a bathroom window (toilet, bidet, sink, larger marble shower and floors-marble all over this gem of a hotel) cross ventilating if needed, along with tall french doors to a front balcony overlooking the main street. I was concerned being frontside instead of overlooking the quiet back this time, but I needn’t of been. When the doors were closed, the room was quiet, but when open, a great view, feel of Porta Maggiore, and the Roman Wall/Aqueduct. All major transportation is easily accessed from this location, tram right out side, redline metro a 10 min walk max, and the main train station of Termini 20 min walk pulling luggage-with buses at all options. Super simple if flying into FCO to walk to the Leonardo Express at the airport and be quickly on your train to Hotel Donatello near Termini-and same for return-about 30 min non-stop ride-tix can be bought at station or even easier online before you ever leave home and are too tired to navigate the machines or wait for a window teller. (14€ pp-cheaper options available, I think this is cheap enough, but there are cheaper options to/from FCO on local trains or buses-but obviously longer trips, and after a long flight, hassle free and simple I find to be at this great hotel quickly!) Even tired, the Colosseo is only 15-20 minute easy walk away-and I recommend heading there, even tired, your first night after a little rest at Donatello. Lit up at night, the Colosseo is breathtaking whether your first trip or your 10th and your energy is renewed by this awesome sight and pleasant walk! And be sure to hit up Il Tempio Di Minerva (5 min from hotel) for dinner and my fave gelato in all the world, Palazzo del Freddo (5 min from Il Tempio!) A European breakfast is served of croissant/roll, butter/jams, juices, coffee and whole fruit in their lovely traditional Italian styled breakfast/patio (in season) area. No it’s not hot, or a “big” breakfast, but very typical and plenty to get you started while saving your tummy room for where you might find an amazing lunch- trust me, you’ll find lunch in Rome better I’m sure than any big, hot breakfast buffet! The breakfast staff, along with all the staff, is very cordial. Room was always made up/cleaned nicely, and I must say a VERY trusty staff! I, sorry to admit, accidentally left the in room safe with all my valuables/cash/cards opened one day, and NOTHING was touched, so thank you room staff for your honesty with my mistake! I, also, love the front desk staff as they are beyond helpful in many areas, and just great to talk to for enrichment. The area is very safe, including later at night, although you will find graffiti about, which isn’t unusual for Rome as a whole. All considered, price, location, staff, comfort, Hotel Donatello can’t be beat and I WILL return! (My son for his first time to Rome/Europe, was very pleased with this hotel as well.) …
The beds were very hard and the walls were paper thin. One night people were talking and laughing in the next room and although I do not know what language they were speaking I can tell you that there were 3 distinctly different voices-that is a thin wall. In the morning, my husband was not allowed to take a cup of coffee up to our room; that bothered him! Although the shower was ok, the sink and toilet were so close I literally had to squat and slide over the toilet-the sink was in my chest!! The front desk staff was excellent and very helpful with taxis, restaurants and directions/
