Wife & I went 4 nights stay at Sextantio.it/grotte 14/03/2015 and what can I say about this hotel that it was the most Unusual & Fantastic place to stay . After arriving a bit late due to Satnav decided to take us back home in Bucks, we were met by a young team at reception where we filled in details...

One year later and this hotel just keeps getting better. I dread the day it becomes so popular I can no longer get a room. Married here in this stunning place a year ago and returned for our first anniversary. Neither the hotel or its people disappointed - attention to detail, care, hospitality and a real genuine warmth. Thank you...

I had been preparing my husband, who is most certainly a luxury seeker, for weeks for the stay in this hotel. When we arrived, he said he expected it to be more cave-like ! I did book the tiniest room, and later tried to upgrade to a room that was more cave-like, without success because it was Easter. Our room...

Nothing can prepare you for staying in a cave. Once you get used to it it is the most weird yet pleasing experience. The complex of caves is so interesting. The hotel staff were the nicest and most helpful we've ever come across in all our years of travelling. Breakfast is in a big cave and ok, lots of cakes...

Matera is a stunning place, even for seasoned travellers. And what better way to explore a cave city than to stay in a cave complex!! The hotel is spread out over several levels, and each cave is done up in a unique and thoughtful style; and the views over the adjacent national park are truly stunning. Things are somewhat more...

This lived up to all expectation and exceeded it in so many ways. Our suite was incredible, huge rooms with an amazing bath in the deepest part of the cave. the rain shower was awesome and so damn fantastic. We adored this room more than any we have ever stayed in. The atmosphere and history add so much to the...

This is by far the most special hotel I have ever stayed in. Everything about it is different from the norm. The rooms are called caves but after a day out exploring Matera, they are so warm and welcoming and we couldn't wait to try out the giant bathtub next to the log fire. The staff couldn't have been more...

We just got back from a trip that included two nights, and we only wish it cold have been longer. The room itself was absolutely beautiful, and while the furnishings are minimal, they are beautiful and totally in keeping with the theme of the place. The room was toasty warm, the King sized bed felt enormous, and the facilities were...

I have stayed in several cave hotels in Matera, and this one is by far the most beautiful. Everything, from the choice of furniture and lighting (including beautiful candlelight) to the bathroom fixtures, has been chosen meticulously to create an incredibly romantic atmosphere, which allows you to appreciate the caves fully. The breakfast is brilliant, served in a large cave,...

There are some mixed reviews on here and I can understand why. If you are looking for a plush, all inclusive, luxury hotel with 24/7 room service menu, sky TV, sofas, cushions and carpets, you will be sorely disappointed. If however you want a break from the trappings of modern life, escape the rat race and experience a truly unique...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Matera can be found in the south of Italy and is world famous because of its Sassi quarters, a stunning and well preserved example of a village where hundreds of caves were turned into dwellings, churches and palaces. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993, the Sassi represent a unique hamlet throughout Italy: the earliest inhabitants date back to the stone and bronze age, in the middle ages it boasted several monastic communities and later became a vibrant farming centre, owing to the rich harvests from the surrounding hills and plains. The Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita project is placed in the oldest part of the Sassi quarters, the CIVITA, facing the spectacular Murgia park and its rock-hewn churches. It comprises 18 rooms (some of them exceeding 160m²) and an ancient church, the "Cripta della Civita," now used as a common area, all renovated to retain their original features. The Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita project is situated in the historical heart of Matera. The 18 caves have been renovated in full respect of the local heritage. Each cave reveals the original shape and materials. The interior design, the respectful and minimalistic approach of Sextantio is reflected in the plain furniture elements. The guests will experience a particular atmosphere evoking the cultural and human history of the Sassi of Matera. ... more   less
