Traveling you get a chance to see different places, with different features and levels of luxury and often you find yourself make comparisons. Here is different, this hotel can not be compared with anyone else because it is undoubtedly unique. Surely Matera, the stones and the magical atmosphere especially in the winter do their part but is the philosophy behind...

The most beautiful romantic place to stay in Matera. The room was styled and sensitively designed to reflect the history and heritage of the original caves and church. The quality of the service provided by all the staff was outstanding and always a friendly face to help with questions or advice. We took our little dog with us and she...

I was compelled to write this review after a conversation with my wife about the best hotel that we have stayed in; this is undoubtedly it. The coming together of the new and the old has been completed with much care and attention, bringing about spectacular results. The caves are just perfect, works of art almost, with the acquired amenities...

While my 4 nights stay was ruined by a crazy snow storm (that resulted in closed roads, cancelled flights and other modes of transportation), despite being stranded & unprepared ( wrong shoes, clothes etc.), I still very much appreciated the beauty and service levels of this unique hotel. The hotel staff were overwhelmed, but were helpful and friendly from beginning...

This is a unique, one of a kind hotel. Guests have the opportunity to connect to history without losing modern comfort. My stay was during the winter and the cave was warm and comfortable. The design is a genius adaptation of the natural cave.

This place is magical, it lived up to all our expectations. Our room was amazing, I cannot believe we slept in a sophiscated cave, with our own donkey trough! The staff were so helpful and made us feel special on our honeymoon. Cannot wait to return.

Le Grotte was like staying in a museum. A really tricked out museum, with a huge egg bathtub, a hundred candles lit for the night, and a spread of gourmet local specialties for breakfast. Centrally located in the town, but you must be able to climb steps. Our stay was a memorable experience, and highly recommended. There was a bit...

Staying at the Sextantio was on my bucket list, and I finally got to do it. Being the type of person with a love of ancient history and darker things, but admittedly someone who also enjoys the more luxurious things in life, this is my dream hotel. This was, without a doubt, the most 10/10 impeccable hotel stay I have...

Matera is a hidden gem in Italy. The hotel experience at Sextantio was amazing, the 24 hour service, amazing staff, and beautifully appointed caves made the whole trip! We stayed for 4 days and cannot say enough amazing things about this hotel/staff. Every detail from the candles to the fresh fruit has been thought out and beautifully executed! Can't wait...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Matera can be found in the south of Italy and is world famous because of its Sassi quarters, a stunning and well preserved example of a village where hundreds of caves were turned into dwellings, churches and palaces. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993, the Sassi represent a unique hamlet throughout Italy: the earliest inhabitants date back to the stone and bronze age, in the middle ages it boasted several monastic communities and later became a vibrant farming centre, owing to the rich harvests from the surrounding hills and plains. The Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita project is placed in the oldest part of the Sassi quarters, the CIVITA, facing the spectacular Murgia park and its rock-hewn churches. It comprises 18 rooms (some of them exceeding 160m²) and an ancient church, the "Cripta della Civita," now used as a common area, all renovated to retain their original features. The Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita project is situated in the historical heart of Matera. The 18 caves have been renovated in full respect of the local heritage. Each cave reveals the original shape and materials. The interior design, the respectful and minimalistic approach of Sextantio is reflected in the plain furniture elements. The guests will experience a particular atmosphere evoking the cultural and human history of the Sassi of Matera. ... more   less
