My husband and I visited Matera in mid November, spending 2 nights at the Sextantio le Grotte della Civita. We had an amazing experience. The hotel is in the area of the oldest cave dwellings in Matera. Each room consists of one or more caves/recesses, kept, as much as possible, true to the original structure with most changes involving electrical...

This does not fit in to most people's concept of a hotel: the rooms (caves) are not in the same building (cave) as the reception; the doors sometimes open out to public view; some of the bathroom facilities don't have doors/curtains; some rooms (caves) don't have windows etc etc - BUT - this is one of the most unique experiences...

I was a little worried about this hotel, because I was told that there was no door for the bathroom. But in our room there was....the bathtub was glorious and the room was really comfortable. It is romantic and charming. The room service is great and the bed is big and cozy. A great hotel. The town itself is interesting,...

Nothing comes close to staying at an accommodation like this. The views just outside the room, candles that last for 3 days, the helpful staff who helped us book a taxi from the station just by a whatsapp message, their local knowledge with good local restaurant recommendations, and the breakfast... Amazing.

You will always want another night at this unique hotel. Upgraded to a suite upon arrival, a spacious cave with candle lit rooms. The bed was the best on our whole trip, incredible comfort and romantic luxury in beautiful stone. The warmth and comfort of the space was surprising and most welcome. The city of Matera in Basilicata, in the arch of Italy's boot, is a UNESCO world heritage site. It teeters on the side of the Gravina Gorge, so where better to stay but in an abandoned cave? These 18 rooms are restored from abandoned caves in traditional design made from local materials and with a minimum of contemporary distractions. All...

On the way to a friend's wedding in Basilicata we could not miss out a visit to the town of Matera, a real gem, still unknown to the large public. As always the trip was preceded by a careful search of accommodation, since the wrong hotel can easily spoil the stay, and lead to not so good memories. One thing...

We had the absolute pleasure of staying in a suite at the Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita. After a long and eventful roadtrip through Puglia we did not know what to expect of the city of Matera. We were solely looking forward to our stay at this hotel. We arrived late in the evening and were starving. We had called...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Matera can be found in the south of Italy and is world famous because of its Sassi quarters, a stunning and well preserved example of a village where hundreds of caves were turned into dwellings, churches and palaces. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993, the Sassi represent a unique hamlet throughout Italy: the earliest inhabitants date back to the stone and bronze age, in the middle ages it boasted several monastic communities and later became a vibrant farming centre, owing to the rich harvests from the surrounding hills and plains. The Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita project is placed in the oldest part of the Sassi quarters, the CIVITA, facing the spectacular Murgia park and its rock-hewn churches. It comprises 18 rooms (some of them exceeding 160m²) and an ancient church, the "Cripta della Civita," now used as a common area, all renovated to retain their original features. The Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita project is situated in the historical heart of Matera. The 18 caves have been renovated in full respect of the local heritage. Each cave reveals the original shape and materials. The interior design, the respectful and minimalistic approach of Sextantio is reflected in the plain furniture elements. The guests will experience a particular atmosphere evoking the cultural and human history of the Sassi of Matera. ... more   less
