I took my wife to Madrid for her 30th Birthday and although we'd never been there and we booked everything online...it was perfect. We wanted to write a positive note about the Petit Palace San Bernardo because the staff there was exceptionally kind and helpful and the hotel was satisfactory. We were a little scared when we first saw the...

Managed to get a unbelievably great rate on this hotel so couldn't turn it down. The location was fantastic - only a very short walk from all the main attractions of madrid city centre and there was no need to get on the metro system at all except to get to and from the airport (this took less than 1...

This is a hotel in the High Tech chain, and it wants to show as a 'high tech' hotel as well..... The high tech things were: - a modern inside - modern rooms - 2 laptops to use for free for surfing - 'high tech' shower....although, as written before, it is not high tech completely as it floods the hall....

This hotel is really modern and fresh. Nice decor, trendy looking. Good size room, we had a twin room. Lovely bathroom, HUGE shower!! For those of you who like privacy though, the bathroom is glass (but you cant see through!) and the door does not lock. This did not cause a problem for us however, afterall, no one wants to...

We have just come back from a long weekend in this hotel and thought that it was very pleasant. The rooms were nice, clean and comfortable. I agree about the flooding shower but it was lovely! The location is the best thing about this hotel, a short walk from Gran Via, tubes, shops and an easy walk to Sol and...

I tried to call my sister, and it took the front desk twenty minutes to answer the phone (which was a challenge to find anyway). When they finally answered, the clerk could not locate my sister's room, and scared my family into thinking she had not arrived. With only 57 rooms in a hotel that advertises itself as high-tech, it's...

Myself and my husband have just returned from staying 4 nights at this hotel. We found it perfect location wise, there are two metro stations within 2 mins walk of the hotel. The hotel is also 10 - 15 min walk to plaza mayor, the royal palace, sol, etc., basically all the central areas. The area feels safe also, the...

An excellent hotel we really liked. The room wasn't particularly large, but very comfortable indeed, with a well-designed, big bathroom (using the shower without flooding the bathroom is very difficult, though). We appreciated the fact of having a computer with free Internet connection in our room, as it proved to be very convenient. The location is excellent - on a...

This is a very good hotel and we were very pleased with it. The location is excellent - right on the Gran Via, but on a quieter side street (though I wouldn't call it a quiet location). The room we got (605) was very large and everything was brand new. The breakfast was also excellent and very rich. The staff...

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
