Location is very close to Puerta del Sol, within walking distance to many sites in Madrid. Staff is friendly and helpful. Our room and bathroom were a bit small for a couple. Not enough lighting in room. Sounds are heard in the room from other rooms and corridor, and from the inner shaft common to other windows.

Situated just 100m from the Sol square this hostal is at a perfect location in Madrid. I had a room at the back of the hostal and it was very quiet being in the middle of the city. The room was clean and cleaned everyday. The shower was a bit small but no problem for a few days, but the... More

So well located. Friendly, room smallish but we were not in Spain to sit in our room. Great value. Close to Plaza Mayor, restaurants, good shopping. A minute to Metro! Safe, not easy access for those that are not guests as staff is right there when you walk in.

Small room, but clean, towels changed every day. Staff very helpful (24 hour reception). Great value for money given the central location.Metro station just 50m away. Can be bit noisy at night, but that's Madrid

Needed a cheap room for a night, and having read other reviews I booked this one. It did not disappoint. I arrived in the late evening and quite tired after a long journey. The receptionist was really friendly and understood my pigeon Spanish. He showed me to my room, a single. It was quite small but was very clean, as... More

We stayed at Hostal El Pilar in mid August. I have nothing bad to say about the place. Its a small hostal on the second floor of a building. The hostal occupies the 2nd and 3rd floors. There is a lift to take to the second floor but once in the hostal there is no lift to go the third... More

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
