During a day trip to Toledo, a thief entered my room using the keys, and ransacked it, cutting my bag open with a penknife. Only money (in different currencies) got stolen, but it added up to about 200euros in value. The person in charge (that night) said if I made a police report, I would be able to claim compensation... I took a single room in Hostal Arti I. It's just 50 metres from Plaza Espana metro station (line 10), which is perfect if you're going to/from the airport (since you only have to change metro lines once - from 10 to 8 or vice versa). The staff was nice, the room was clean. What more could you ask for.... More

This is a very basic hostel with shared bathroom and private rooms. Highly recommended due to its location. It's meters away from the subway entrance so its great if you're carrying loads of luggage. Breakfast was included but it is served some 300m away from the hostel and is not worth the trip.

Staying in Malasana

Neighbourhood Profile
Malasana
Hip bars and galleries, independent theaters and music venues, young people with tattoos and funky hair, narrow winding streets — this is Malasaña. Near the center, Plaza Dos de Mayo is a gathering of friends outside bars, dog owners, artists under craft tents, and creative types with notebooks and sketchpads on the plaza’s benches. It may not be as neat and tidy as many other parts of the city, but this only adds to the Malasaña edge. Shops and bars here range from hippie-crunchy to upscale trendy, and on weekends, the streets are bustling around the clock as the nightlife progresses from dinner to bar to disco to late-night food. On the west side of the neighbourhood is the subdistrict called Conde Duque, named after a large pink fort in its center that has been converted into a cultural center for exhibitions and performances. Prettier yet just as edgy, this intimate corner of Malasaña is home to a young international community.
