This hostel is really good for a casual / fun weekend in Madrid, as long as you are not too demanding on quality. This is no 4* hotel, but then it doesn't claim to be. We travelled as a group of dads with our teenage sons for a soccer match, each sharing his room with son. It was perfect. If...

I was staying here for 2 nights in December 2012. I booked online for a rate of approx 62Euro and paid in advance for a single room. The hotel is very well situated right next to Opera, where you have Metro, restaurants, shopping, bars etc and everything is close (Plaza Mayor, Gran Via, ...). The room was functional (heating was...

The walls seem to be very thin and you can hear everything. There isn't much to see or do in the immediate vicinity of the hotel. Even with the noise inconvenience the hotel is clean, comfortable and very good value for money.

The hotel is just 1 street into the center of the Old Madrid - Puerto Del Sol, and just in front of the Opera Metro (which comes out to the Opera house). It is just across from the National Palace (must see!). The location is wonderful - minus the noise of the main quarters which is full of shopping (busy,...

The name of this establishment was probably named after the proprietor, who swaggers in the hostal like a grand duke and barks at his staff and customers. Not realising that keys had to be deposited at reception upon leaving (not a problem in other hostals I have stayed in), he barked at me across the corridor to leave the keys....

I stayed here in June and booked for 2 nights. I left after the 1st night as I had a completely sleepless night due to the heat. The room wasn't airconditioned nor was there a fan provided. I had to leave the window open all night, but my room, at the back, seemed to overlook some kind of bar or...

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
