Suitbertusstrasse is in a safe, quiet district of Dusseldorf , but is within an easy walk or tram (712 ) ride to the bustle and noise of the often not very salubrious Altstadt. Our fellow guests were business people and Germans or other Europeans visiting family. Many also were return guests. A family with three young boys seemed very comfortable at the hotel. All the staff speak good English and also many other languages. The hard-working housekeeper, Betty does not speak English, but her German is so clear and her communication skills so good that she was easy to understand. Our room was very clean and the bed was so comfortable that I still miss it. I think that the rates are very reasonable for a three-star hotel. Local phone calls were only 20 cents. There is a small charge for items in the mini bar, but the hotel does not mind guests using the fridge for their own purchases. Single guests seem to enjoy a beer and a chat with the staff in the small bar in the lobby. The hotel's fax is FAX is 49 211 159 78 686.
Our room was comfortable and spacious, and a kettle and cups were provided. Storage was good, and the bathroom a good size. Everything was cleaned well every day. The small balcony overlooking the road would have been nice to sit on had the weather been suitable! The road was generally quiet at night (I am a very light sleeper, and I was ok with it) and doesn't seem to get much through traffic.
The staff were all very friendly and helpful, and their English was considerably better than my German!
As most reviewers have said, the breakfast is excellent. A huge variety of fruit, nuts, cheese, ham, lovely bread, yogurt, hot food....impossible to fault, in my view.
How to get to the hotel from the airport:
The easiest way to get to the hotel from the airport by public transport is simply to get the S11 local train from the airport terminal, and get off at Volklingerstrasse station (about 20-25 minutes journey time). Exit the station by the steps to your left as you get off the train, cross over the road and walk to your right. Take the first street on your left, then turn first right into Martinstrasse. Continue on this road and cross at the lights (there is a church on your left here). Continue in the same direction, past the sushi restaurant, then turn first left into Suitbertusstrasse. The hotel is about a hundred metres or so on the left, opposite the Berufsschule.
The walk is only about 8 minutes, it just takes a while to explain!
The S11 runs on the hour and half hour from the airport, and you buy a ticket from the machine on the platform, costs about €2 20.
The whole journey from airport to hotel takes about 35 minutes.
The hotel is close to transport. Turn left out of the hotel and walk to the end of the street to Aachenerstrasse, cross the road and wait for the 712 tram. First stop is outside a three storey shopping centre called Düsseldorf Arcaden. The building also houses a public swimming pool. Stay on board and continue to the Heinrich Heine Allee stop for the Old Town (Altstadt). Explore the area or keep walking in the direction the tram is travelling and you will reach the opera house on the right. Walk further along the Heinrich Heine Alleee to Ratingerstrasse, turn left and you will soon arrive at the popular Füchschen brewery and pub.
When alighting from the tram you can also head away from the Altstadt, across the tracks and you will reach the Königsallee, Düsseldorf's 5 star shopping avenue. The Schadowstrasse shopping area is also close at hand.
Leave the hotel and turn right, then right again onto Martinstrasse, then left onto Germaniastrasse, walk to the end and you will arrive at Georg Schulhoff Platz. Tram 709 will take you to the Rhine Tower (Rheinturm) which is well worth a visit and the state parliament. The river is a short walk away and a stroll along the promenade will lead you to the Altstadt. Get off at Stadttor - you'll see the tower well beforehand or get off at the next stop for the Rheinkniebrücke, the bridge over the Rhine. Stay on the tram and it will take you into the city or to the railway station. Watch out for the kissing couple on the advertising column by the Poststrasse stop. The Esprit Arena can be reached via the subway U78 from the railway station or from the Altstadt.
We parked at the hotel's own parking garage. Our rooms were spacious and clean. Each room had a (shared) balcony and large windows that could be opened. The bathroom had quite a long bath tub which was good to lie in. The rooms had a mini bar, plenty of storage space, a water boiler and free wifi (the code could be optained at the front desk).
The breakfast was very good, with plenty of options and even warm food like bacon/eggs. There was also awide variety of fruits, meats and cheese to pick from. The breakfast buffet had a proper coffee machine for great cappucinos.
You can get to the city centre by tram 712, which is a 5 minute walk from the hotel. The Arkaden Mall is quite near (20min walk) and is good for shopping (but doesn't beat the city centre). Also near the hotel is a nice Sushi restaurant called ManThei.
All in all the Garden Hotel offered good value for money and we would definitely book again for the next shopping trip.
Pros:
-Good breakfast(and a decent coffee machine).
-Clean sheets.
-Polite staff.
-Only 2 1/2 km from the city core(the old town), close enough for a short walk.
Cons:
-Old yellowed electric appliances in the room.
-Thick layer of dust on lamps etc.etc.
-The shower curtain had big grey spots of dirt.
-The carpet in the room was perhaps clean but so old and haggard that it didnt make much difference.
-The minibar contained nothing but three condoms(thankfully unused...).
-One could hear the elevator clearly everytime someone used it, it woke me up several times.
Conclusion:
The hotel was good enough for a single night work visit but i would not stay there privately or with family. Especially not with children(they tend to find all those hidden dirty spots).

We stayed 2 weeks and had a large room whcih was more like a suite but there are smaller double rooms at lower rates.
The Garden Hotel is not in the centre of the city, but the Altstadt is easily reached on a 712 tram. The Rhine is 20 minutes walk away, and the garden overlooks the little Dussel river. The rooms are cosy in winter, and in summer, each room has a balcony . Please see our previous reviews for more details.
