Really enjoyed our stay in this hotel. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the hotel itself is very nice. The location is in a quiet area of Kreuzberg, however there are restaurants/bars and the U-bahn all within walking distance. Unexpected added bonus was the cosy under-floor heating in the bathroom - perfect for cold mornings!

What a smashing place to stay! We thought carefully about where to stay in Berlin (it was our first trip there!) and eventually settled on Kreuzberg. Hotel Johann seemed to have good reviews so we booked a room there for three nights. It was the perfect place to stay. Kreuzberg is far enough away from the tourist traps but close...

This is a cozy hotel with friendly service. Located in quiet area but in walking distance to central Kreuzberg, Bergmannkiez and Neukölln. Rooms are very nice with high ceilings and proper windows. Very comfy beds, powerful shower. Breakfast is inexpensive and decent. Overall an excellent choice. Only downside is that the Internet is terribly slow. That should be sorted out.

A small, reasonably-priced, cozy hotel off the beaten track. Very nice breakfast for 9 Euros, staff friendly. HOWEVER, the availability of WiFi was a key necessity in our booking and WiFi was difficult, problematic and inconsistent. Therefore we had to switch hotels because of this.

We enjoyed our four night stay at Hotel Johann. It is within easy walking distance of two subway stations, which was very handy for sightseeing. The room was large and quiet. The staff at the front desk were very friendly and the dogs that would sometimes be with them were a bonus :) Only small negative was the breakfast -...

Hotel Johann is an enjoyable stay. It's located in a quiet part of the city but it's easily reachable with public transportation. Hotel is clean and rooms are large. Breakfast is ok if not really stellar and service was friedly.

I generally stay in Mitte so the Johann is a little further out than I'm used to but Gneisenaustraße and Hallesches Tor stations are close by so it didn't really matter too much. It was actually quite nice to stay somewhere a little quieter for a change! All the staff are very friendly and helpful. The decor is minimalist/funky and...

But not really near anything, if that makes sense. You can't walk out your door to a cafe or store...everything is a few blocks away. But it's close to bus and U-bahn and pretty much central to all of Berlin. 10 minute walk to Bermanstrasse, where there's a ton of great stuff going on. Great breakfast. Bikes for rent (although...

We loved Hotel Johann. It is in a quiet neighborhood, easy to walk to several UBahn stations and near several restaurants and cafes. The room was perfect with exposed brick walls and vaulted ceilings, a supremely comfortable bed and pillows and a lovely view over a back courtyard. Karina, in particular, was warm and helpful. There is a cozy little...

Hotel Johann provided the ideal base from which to explore the city and was within easy walking distance of a U train station. The room was modern and comfortable and the staff were most friendly and helpful. The small library of books for guest use was a nice touch and the location opposite a small wooded park with an outdoor...

Staying in Kreuzberg

Neighbourhood Profile
Berlin's revolutionary heart and immigrant roots can both be found in Kreuzberg, but this central neighbourhood is beginning a new chapter. In the 1950s and '60s, Turkish guest workers settled around Kottbusser Tor, while in the 1980s and '90s, rambunctious squatters and artists gathered to live a carefree life here. An old hospital even became a hotspot of riots between squatters and police. Today you can still find the best kebabs in town and many underground clubs, but a lot has changed as well. The hospital has been transformed into an art center, and increasingly you will find new urban cafés, restaurants and designer shops. Rising housing prices and gentrification threaten the spirit of this area along the Spree River, but the neighbourhood’s legacy is upheld by a very engaged community fighting to preserve its rebellious identity.
