The location is very nice, in the old Jewish quarter, with much to see, shops, restaurants & bars within short walking distance. The other reviewers are correct that the breakfast is good but that you should speak German to stay at this pension. My wife does so we did not have problems. If not use google translate to confirm that...

We found this hotel via a tourist info shop located in Hauptbahnhof. Since there were tracks and fileds championship games at that time in Berlin, we couldn't believe that we had found a place to stay. By the way, It is located in Berlin Mitte (Tor Str.) which is originally in the formerly Eastern part of the Berlin and is...

I decided to leave the Merkur after my first night. I suppose it is ok for the price - the rooms are drab, but clean. The problem I had was that I fell asleep with my room light on (which I sometimes do) and when I got down to breakfast the next morning there was a note left for me...

We had a horrendous time here. The rudest manager we'd ever encountered enywhere. I shall find a copy of my letter to the german tourist office whom did indeed pursue a MAJOR investigation. I do not reccommend this place to anybody. The abuse we experienced was unparallelled and it was not just towards us... One moring, whilst at breakfast (over-boiled...

My partner and I stayed at this hotel over the May bank holiday weekend (UK). I came across the Hotel Pension Merkur on the internet and contacted the hotel directly through their website. Initially, making a reservation was difficult as the hotel staff do not speak english (communication was an issue throughout our whole stay as none of the hotel...

Staying in Mitte

Neighbourhood Profile
Mitte
The centre of Berlin, Mitte is most famous for sights like the Brandenburg Gate, Alexanderplatz, and Museum Island. The central location makes this one of the city's most expensive places to live. It is here the oldest traces of the city can be found, and evidence of some significant transformations, as well. The gangsters that once ruled the impoverished streets between Alexanderplatz and Hackescher Markt have given way to an international crowd pursuing fashionable designer clothes, the newest food trends and frequenting the many craft shops. Graphic designers have taken up residence in what used to be backyard barns and stables. There are still vestiges of the old days, however. The occasional housing complex is a reminder of the neighbourhood’s past. And if you look carefully, an old 1920s ball house nestled amongst the art galleries and exhibitions of Auguststrasse can still teach you how to dance the old fashioned way.
