Detailed Reviews
Always difficult to get a good price for a room as a solo traveller. The room was fine and clean, although was very dated and there was a bit of a musty smell inside. Bathroom worked fine but shower only sits in the bathtub, no wall holder, so I had to sit in the tub to use it. Only stayed for one night, would probably not want to be here more than a couple.
Modern double glazed windows kept the noise out. Staff were friendly and helpful, could store my luggage. There was an accidental overcharge for the city tax (as they thought I was with someone) but they did easily refund this and apolgise.
Neighbourhood is quite diverse, but didn't feel unsafe by keeping to the main roads. Seemed quite studenty. Not a bad distance from most sites and decent tram/metro access. Supermarkets nearby and good choice of restaurants.
4/5 because it was much cheaper than any other private room I could find. But does need a renovation.

bedroom and bathroom with a sad design (equipment, colour of the walls...), it is better not to open the curtains, average comfort, painful area but easy to access by tram... I didn't order breakfast because it was too expensive (10€), almost the price of a diner in restaurant.

I was very satisfied with my stay at Du Helder. The hotel is old and a little tired, but it was clean both in the room, bathroom and common room. The service was good and the internet worked perfectly. You don't need much more than that. The location is basically just right, but the tram runs right outside and it's not far to the nearest subway station, so you can easily get around. It was good to have several grocery stores in the immediate vicinity.

The hotel is in a good location to access some popular areas of Lyon. The rooms are incredibly tired and need updating, especially the bathrooms. The price we paid also seems very high for the quality of the room, but for one night it served its purpose. We would not stay for longer than that, but it gave us easy access to where we needed to be for the evening.

Pension is my pied-à-terre in Lyon, and I wouldn't change it for anything in the world. I have been staying here for over 20 years, and it is always a pleasure to discover a new room in this property, whose Art Deco style of the 30s has been gradually renovated by its owners. Ideally located in a lively area, close to transport and shops, it allows to move safely, contrary to some opinions that might be read.
The welcome is warm by the whole team and very attentive to our needs. Unbeatable in terms of quality/Award given its location. I recommend, recommend, highly recommend!!!

There are no blinds, normally is not a problem but it is when you stay in a room on the first floor with a huge window, basically you can’t sleep with your window open. Sometimes lights and elevator don’t work and maybe breakfast is too expensive, 9,50€ per person. Every room in the hotel smells bad.

Dear customer, We appreciate your detailed feedback and apologize for the inconveniences you experienced during your stay. Regarding the absence of blinds, we understand the importance of a good night's sleep and are aware of the challenges related to first-floor windows. We are currently exploring solutions to enhance window coverage to ensure better privacy. Concerning possible odors, especially during the warm months, Lyon can experience high temperatures. The carpet in the rooms may absorb heat, and we are aware of this aspect. We would like to inform you that plans are underway to install a Mechanical Ventilation System (VMC) in all rooms, which should contribute to improving air circulation. Regarding the cost of breakfast, we value your feedback. Our buffet breakfast at €9.50 offers a variety of quality options, including hot beverages, fruit juices, pastries, meat and cheese, as well as a selection of jams, honey, Nutella, and yogurt. We believe it adds value to the overall experience. We understand that your stay did not meet your expectations, and we sincerely apologize. We are actively working to address these issues and hope you will give us the opportunity to welcome you again under improved conditions. Best regards, The Hotel du Helder Team.

Dear customer, Thank you sincerely for taking the time to share your feedback with us. Your observations are invaluable and enable us to continually improve our service. Regarding the hot water pressure, it is true that it can vary depending on the floor, and we appreciate your patience. We are currently exploring solutions to standardize this experience across all our rooms. Concerning the cleaning of our rooms, this is carried out by a service provider who uses specialized cleaning products, implemented by qualified and professional staff. We sincerely hope that these explanations provide you with a better understanding of our processes, and we would be honored to welcome you again to offer an enhanced experience. Best regards, L'Hôtel du Helder.

The room smelled of cigarettes as there were plenty of cigarette butts on the terrace. The beds were made up daily but the trash was not emptied and no new shampoo was provided (only one sachet for a 3 night stay!). The hotel was quite clean and the staff were friendly.

Dear guest, Thank you for sharing your feedback about your stay. We are delighted that you appreciated our pricing. However, we would like to clarify that our establishment is strictly non-smoking, and the only authorized areas for smoking are the balconies, which few rooms have. We will reinforce our guidelines to prevent any future inconvenience. Moreover, we are surprised to learn that the cleaning did not meet your expectations. We engage a professional service provider to ensure the cleanliness of our rooms, and we will closely examine this issue. Regarding the shampoo, please be aware that we have standard-sized containers, and you can request as much as needed at the hotel reception. Despite these inconveniences, we hope you will give us another opportunity to welcome you and address these concerns. Best regards, L'Hôtel du Helder.

A decent stay. The charm of the old one will please some, although the old character of the place could make some compromises to modernize the facilities, including electrical outlets or hair dryers. It is also for this reason that the room was warm, with a smell not pleasant on arrival. Fortunately, we can open the window but the street is quiet so we will not leave it open to sleep. Despite a concern to allocate the room (for 1 person while the Reservation was for 2), welcome at the reception and nothing wrong with the cleanliness of the place. A simple Inn, convenient for one night but maybe not for extended stays.

Room didn't have any fridge, only TV and a very old hair dryer machine. Provided very basic service for a stay in lyon for someone who doesn't spend much time in the hotel.
the key of the room stopped working each day, which led to unecessary trips to ask at the reception to activate the key everyday of my stay. The small wardrobe had a dark mark as if it had suffered some electrical fire in the past. Room as very silent with the windoes open, however you could hear all the water goign down from other rooms through the canalization while in the room with the bathroom door closed.

Responded 11 Sept 2024
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are sorry to hear that your stay did not meet your expectations and appreciate your detailed comments. We would like to clarify that it is standard practice for all guests to return their room key to the reception when leaving the hotel. This policy is in place to ensure the security of your key in case of loss or theft. This information is clearly communicated at the reception, in your room, and was also explained to you when the key was handed to you at the beginning of your stay. We understand that this may have been inconvenient, but if you had followed the hotel's rules, this issue could have been avoided. It is normal not to find a fridge in the room as we are a 2-star establishment. If you require a fridge, you should consider staying at a 3-star hotel. Regarding the noise from the pipes, with a hotel of our size (100 rooms), it is common to hear water running during peak hours, such as in the morning when many guests use the facilities. Thank you again for your observations, and we hope you will consider staying with us again in the future to experience the ongoing improvements we are making. Kind regards, The Hôtel du Helder Team
