Stayed at The Royal Hop Pole on the Friday before Christmas to break up the journey from West Cornwall to family in the North-West. On checking in, we were asked if we wanted a room with a view, at the top of the hotel, as they weren’t particularly busy. Being a very old building, the stairs from the ground floor...

Dear Guest, Thank you for your review. We are so pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us - many guests use us a 'halfway house' when travelling to and from Cornwall. It is great to hear that you enjoyed the history and charm of our building, and agree that the wonky floors definitely add to the character!...

Booked this for a stopover. Interesting old building but with a Wetherspoons restaurant, so very noisy! Breakfast ok but much better places to eat in Tewkesbury. Good central location with parking at the rear.

Dear Guest, Thank you for your review. We are pleased to hear that you found the building to be old and interesting, and found that we were in a good central location. We are sorry to hear that you found it noisy - our pub shuts at 11:30pm so there should be no noise after this time. We hope to...

The Royal Hop Pole is ideally placed own centre, a short walk from the Abbey (well worth a visit!). The hotel is run by Wetherspoons and has a lively pub/restaurant area frequented by locals. The restaurant is open all day and serves a very wide selection of food, typical of Wetherspoons. Rooms are reasonably proved and are good value. They...

Dear Guest, Thank you for your review. We appreciate all feedback, as this is what enables us to improve going forward. I am sorry to hear about the issue with our front of house staff at the end of the evening - this is not what we look to achieve. I would be grateful if you could contact us directly...

A lovely old building which Wetherspoons have restored whilst retaining much of it's character and charm. Our bedroom was quite stunning as was the huge hallway which led to it. The whole hotel is an historical gem with beams, a magnificent fireplace, references to Dickens and Mr. Pickwick, and of course good ale.

Dear Guest, Thank you for your review. We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us, and your walk through the medieval hall to your room too! We really are steeped in history, and of course featured in Dickens' Pickwick papers. We hope to welcome you back again soon. Kind Regards The Royal Hop Pole Team

Beautiful building and hotel with lots of history and only a stones throw away from the Abbey. Room was immaculate, staff very pleasant and as you would expect the food was good and very reasonable. Really nice for a short break, will be trying some more of the Wetherspoons hotels after the experience of this one.

We recently visited family in Tewksbury and chose this hotel because of its location and price. What a great idea. The hotel itself is steeped in history. There is a medieval hall and artwork, plus the quirkiness and character that comes from the age of the building. All the staff were friendly, helpful and knowledge. The hotel is above a...

It was a very nice, good value meal which we ate in the garden at the back of the restaurant as it was a nice sunny day. It is in a great location, near the center of the town, and I would definitely recommend to anyone.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
This well-known landmark is an amalgamation of historic buildings dating from the 15th and 18th centuries, known as a number of names, including The Crown during King Henry VIII's reign. However, eventually it was named The Royal Hop Pole when Queen Mary stayed in 1937 and gave it the official 'Royal.' Charles Dickens even mentions The Royal Hop Pole in his first novel, The Pickwick Papers. Other interesting information and pictures are located all over the hotel, including information on how the Medieval Banqueting Hall was discovered when the hotel was recently refurbished. The Royal Hop Pole has its own beautiful garden which leads to the banks of The River; there you can see picturesque views of the surrounding countryside and the Malverns. ... more   less
