***UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP*** The Abbotsford Hotel has a rich history as a long-standing symbol of hospitality. This iconic establishment, originally constructed in 1916 as private residence, transitioned into the Iona hotel before being renamed the Abbotsford in 1966. An extensive remodel was completed in 2024 under the new ownership of Brian Daly (from Coylton, Scotland and Tina Daly, from the US). This full remodel blends modern amenities with the hotel’s original charm and character, creating a unique and inviting atmosphere. Our accommodations have been thoughtfully crafted to immerse you in the true spirit of Scotland. Our entire team invites you to settle in and embrace our rooms and explore the unique and individual personality that each one has to offer.

Detailed Reviews
If you are looking for a souless corpolrate place then this is not it! this wee place is full of quirky historical and amusing ornaments and definetley has the personal touch. It is a little old fashioned and could maybe do with a bit of refurbishment but we couldn't fault the cleanliness of the place,it was absolutely spotless.
i had booked a room months ago( we were attending an event nearby) and paid on booking(spoke to a lady) .However on checking in the gentleman informed me that i hadn't paid as it hadn't been noted down.Thankfully i had a record of payment on my phone and he was happy to accept that i had paid.Perhaps the communication systems/records need improving?? and maybe some staff training?
Anyway the host was very welcoming and chatty and very helpful.
the breakfast was very good , plenty of choice of cereals, yoghurt, fruit juice and a cooked breakfast
.the location of the hotel is great and easy to get to.ts a 5 minute walk to the beach. There are good parking facilities at the hotel.
we will definetly visit again as the host was so welcoming and are keen to try out the resturaunt and beer garden in the summer.
there is also a nice bar and a pool room.

It has been a difficult 2½ years for everyone and we've been apprehensive about venturing forth after the worst of Covid. So I was pleased to find in the Good Beer Guide, this quiet traditional hotel on the southside of Ayr, overlooking the old racecourse site, now a park and golf course. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable and we found the staff welcoming and friendly. A good breakfast set us up for the day and an evening meal was enjoyable, tasty and good value. Having missed socialising for so long, the locals and guests provided us with plenty of friendly chatter in the cosy bar at night. Well done Abbotsford and staff!

I stayed overnight with my partner in the ‘Bellisle’ room - a lovely golf themed room which was very clean and spacious. Each of the rooms are themed which added a nice touch. Much better compared to the pre-renovation state of the dated rooms in the hotel. The king size bed was extremely comfortable and the bathroom was modern with a fabulous shower, with soft hotel-themed bathrobes which was a lovely touch
Staff were great and friendly and I had a full breakfast which was delicious, especially Courtney who was lovely. Highly recommend this hotel if you are looking for a contemporary and cosy room in the heart of Ayr.

Had a very strange experience when we stayed here a few days ago.
The beds were tired and sagging and the bathroom was like the curate’s egg, clean in parts. When used by my wife, the ancient hair dryer (last tested 2017), went out with a spike of flame and a cloud of smoke. At breakfast the sausages were uncooked in the middle and the toast consisted of four half slices of dry, hard, but untoasted bread and two pieces of cold, hard toast, one of which had a bite taken out of it. I pointed this out to the cook and asked for some fresh toast; he yelled something about the bite being “just a knock off” and “ would do his very best” (derisively) as he disappeared into to the kitchen.
At the reception desk when checking out I mentioned the hair dryer to the elderly man whom I presumed was the owner, however when I mentioned the bite out of the toast, he erupted in fury in the middle of my sentence, shouting “that’s rubbish, we don’t want your sort here; get out!”. Completely furious, shouting and screaming insults he dragged a piece of our luggage outside into the car park; my wife and I followed, bemused. We attempted to pay, but being literally thrown out, precluded that.
This whole exchange was in our opinion absolutely unacceptable behaviour from this individual, a totally unprovoked and extremely rude and aggressive response to a polite comment, literally half a dozen words. Had we been in his shoes, we would have been apologizing to the guests, particularly regarding the lack of up to date safety checks on the hairdryer, which could have resulted in a serious accident
At 75 years old and a company director I have travelled extensively but I’ve never experienced anything as bizarre as this person’s behaviour before. He could have stepped straight out of a well-known television sitcom.

We arranged to meet friends for drinks at The Abbotsford hotel. It was such a beautiful evening sitting out doors in the sun.. lovely surroundings with beautiful plants and foliage which created a really nice ambiance and atmosphere. Staff were very attentive and friendly.. The owner was very much present too chatting with customers and ensuring we were being looked after.. We decided to stay here to eat as we stayed longer than anticipated.. We were all very happy and impressed by our food choices & very much impressed by the prices too.. Hoping to return soon to sample more of their hospitality..
A hidden gem .. Totally unpretentious. please take this as intended as “a true compliment” to your efforts as new hosts in our town.

I was surprised by the high standard of the bedroom in what had been a previously mid-standard hotel, albeit one with character and charm. We had a 5-star quality overnight stay with great attention to detail from mine hosts. We loved dancing to the live music. The band were happy to play requests. Our bedroom retained the previous character I remembered from the Abbotsford but had been freshly decorated, upgraded and had every comfort, including beautiful robes and toiletries. The breakfast menu was extensive and the food was tasty and piping hot. I have to add that the coffee was outstanding. We’ll be back!

The decor of this hotel is very opulent and quite impressive. The bedrooms are themed and attention to detail makes each room very individual. Large crystal chandeliers adorned both our rooms. As two couples travelling paying the same rate it was a bit disappointing that our rooms were a fair distance apart and one clearly bigger and better than the other. We had the Scottie dog room and it was so small that we had to take turns to walk around. A lovely big bed totally engulfed the space. Sitting at the dressing table would only be possible for a small person and the mirror there was not eye level so a bit useless really. Bathroom was large and the shower lovely with very nice toiletries provided.I did feed this space issue back at check out so hopefully they may re-organise a bit but worth checking which room you have if you feel you need extra space. That said , it was beautifully done. We ate in the restaurant and the food was very good as was the breakfast. Staff all very friendly. The bar area again was very small and very busy when we were there . Overall I would say we had a good stay and I would recommend

Really good quality food and generous portions. We've had dinner three times during lockdown and the service has been excellent each time. I don't know if the hotel offers a delivery service as we always collect our order in person. Well done Paul and Jason.

What can I say the food is excellent and with generous portions. Staff are friendly and polite, Mrs Hunter which I was given the honour of calling Liz. Is an amazing Lady and will possibly never retire from the place. Jason an excellent chef and there to make your stay as pleasant as it can be. Beer garden and bar were fantastic to sit out in the sun and the bar to cool down. Rachel what can you say excellent character with locals and guests, again nothing is to much bother and will go out her way to make sure your stay it excellent. The young barman sorry didn't get your name was polite and all that goes with a good member of staff. A couple commented on the food and he replied could you pop on a comment on trip advisor and that's why I am.
Thank you for a great stay and hope to see you soon Peter.
