Neighbourhood
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.

Comfortable clean but expensive. Small bathrooms. A substandard breakfast offering and lack of a bar or indeed any communal facilities make this somewhere i wouldn't rush to return to. Warm welcome though and good service

Response from sarah o, Manager at Albany Street Apartments
Responded 30 Jul 2014
To any potential guests reading this post, I would like to respond to this review to explain the situation. Firstly I would like to thank the reviewer for her honesty regarding the apartments. They are clean, spacious and located in the heart of the City Centre. The young guest was ask on several occasions to keep the noise in the apartments to a minimum as we have a good relationship with our neighbours and would like to maintain this. The guest was also warned that her deposit would be lost if any complaints were received. I took a phone call and a very angry e-mail from our neighbours complaining about the noise. We do not discriminate at Albany Street Apartments, therefore do not allow hen groups to bend the rules just because "they are a hen party". The reviewer suggests that I should otherwise. I tried to be kind and charge the group £15 from the deposit for having to send an employee to the apartment to warn them about the noise, only for the reviewer, after check out, sending me constant threats of a bad review unless I credit the £15 back. I feel I have been very fair in this situation and my kindness of not with holding the full deposit totally back fired. To any potential guest reading this, I urge them to read the previous review written by a large group staying in an other of our apartments on the same weekend.

I was there last weekend with a group of 9 girls as a city base for going to Musselburgh races. We all had a fantastic time, it was a lovely, clean apartment in a great central location and we would definitely book again.

we are looking or accommodations in july 3, 2017 please contact me if avail. 5 people.
Is there any availability for October? I am looking for a three bedroom accommodation for three people from October 19th through the 22nd. I have stayed at two of your Albany Street apartments in the past and would like to again. I may also need to be in Edinburgh in September. Would you have any availability then. Thank You, Valerie

"We stayed in 35 b, very nice, plenty of room for our family of 8"
"We stayed in the middle apartment with the longest balcony and the living room overlooking the city. Stay there."
"If coming by train advise a taxi, although its a short distance carrying luggage can be a treak, its a very steep climb, a taxi only cost £2.50, well worth it!"
"The apartments seem to be in several locations so check each out on the net and enquire if unsure."
