This was our first stop on our Scotland tour and what a nice place to land and get ourselves sorted to a whopping 8 hour time change. The hotel is lovely and even has a lift so you don't need to worry about repacking an overnight bag to carry up stairs. The location couldn't be more handy and the views...

Perfect location right in the centre, opposite the castle. Interesting old building with great architecture. Very friendly and helpful front desk reception with the facility to leave your luggage before and after check out. Front suite room and ensuite were both spacious with a generous welcome tray with glass bottled water, biscuits and various teas. Beautiful large room with huge...

This is a really old hotel, I mean hundreds of years old. It does have an elevator to the 4th floor, we were on the 5th and walked up the rest of the way. The view out of the window looked something out of a Dicken's novel. The view from the Bar and Restaurant was absolutely amazing of the Castle....

To celebrate a Big birthday my family took me for afternoon tea here. It was lovely. Our tea was served in The Observatory Restaurant that has the most wonderful vista of Princes Street and the Castle. It was 3.30 on a Thursday and we had the restaurant to ourselves which meant we had the best table in the place. If...

Please ignore the whingers who call this little gem of a hotel "tired". When you are staying slap bang in the middle of Princes Street (at a fraction of the price of the surrounding hotels), when you are given the warmest of welcomes by ALL the staff, when you are given a clean room with an immensely comfortable bed, lovely...

For the price, the location is absolutely fantastic. Right in the middle of princes street opposite one of the many princes street gardens entrances. The room was small, but accommodating and nicely furnished with the usual tea, coffee etc. Good blackout curtain. Breakfast not too great, but ok, and included in price.

Did a last minute booking after checking out from another Hotel that was disappointing. This was a welcoming and very clean establishment. The staff was friendly, well informed and very polite. The room was very clean, with a great view of the Edinburgh Castle. The room itself was very comfortable, very well sotcked tea and coffee bar, water available as...

Older hotel slightly run down but great location, very friendly staff and the best breakfast of any hotel I have stayed in fresh cooked to order and very tasty. View of Edinburgh castle on a good day. Unfortunately not when we stayed but that's the luck of the draw.

Pleasant staff, breakfast waiter is hilarious, if you appreciate his lack of patience and Scottish dourness. Porridge really good, breakfast nice. Room tired and tatty, hotel needs some tlc, huge stains on carpet outside lift, bed comfy but bathroom needs regrouting and walls refreshing. Feels neglected. Good location but definitely not worth £170 we paid for one night's stay.

This hotel has a great location. The staff were all very helpful and attentive. The waiter in the restaurant was extremely helpful and gave us maps marking out points of interest. The bedroom was on the 5th floor with only a porthole for a window in both bedroom and bathroom. I found the hotel to be clean on the surface...

Staying in Princes Street and Gardens

Neighbourhood Profile
Princes Street and Gardens
Glaswegians tease Edinburghers that their High Street is only half one, since buildings only line one side. But what they don’t say is how extraordinary the views are from Princes Street as a result. From here you look onto expansive and decorative public gardens beneath the mighty basalt cliffs on which Edinburgh’s Castle stands proud above the rest of the dramatic old town skyline. Yet many of those on Princes Street look the other way, as they’re concerned with chain store shopping or catching the tram or a train at main train station Waverley. But it’s not all utility here; the Scottish National Gallery rewards purposeless wandering, and December’s huge winter market in the gardens begins a season of revelry which ends with Hogmanay, Britain’s largest New Year’s street party.
