The bunk beds were basic, not particularly comfortable and incredibly noisy! Juat takibg a deep breathe would make the springs squeak! Also, the en-suite loos were never cleaned during my 3 night stay - I could tell from the skid marks in the pan! Also, Safestay is a misnomer - because it had an integrated public bar, non-residents could wander... More

Spend one night in a double room. Apart from the poor matrasses we had a pleasant stay. Clean room, helpful friendly staff and a surprisingly good breakfast, real value for money. Location is fantastic, right behind the royal Mile in the old town.

This is a great location for a group getaway break.lovely breakfast to set you up for the day. It was a bit noisy during the night with other guests returning very late and not respecting that others would be in bed.

Right in the middle of Old Town and easily access (by foot) to major attractions/food outlets. The staff is friendly and give good recommendation on places to visit. I booked a family room with own bathroom just to have more privacy. Reasonable price and clean room

The stay was wonderful and the location of the accommodation is very much in the heart of the city. I would suggest this for everyone who looks for a good hostel accommodation in Edinburgh. I have been a Solo traveler and have booked a bed in a 12 people mixed dorm. The cleanliness was good and the front-desk is open... More

This hostel has good location, near to main attraction, small market and place to eat. We arrive quite late, so it quite difficult to find the place, so we took a taxi and it was a short ride :) The hostel helps us with free walking tour around edinburgh, it took around 3 hours and very worthy to take the... Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
