What a wonderful hotel. We were greeted by Eddie and Maria. We had a front bedroom, It was so peaceful. The hosts were fantastic and recommended places for us to visit, even though we had an itinerary. The breakfast was fantastic. If we wanted to we could've left our suitcases at the hotel till it was time to leave to...

An absolutely perfect place to stay in Edinburgh. A gorgeous Georgian Terrace home with garden views from or back. Close to many buses in the Eastern portion of New Town. The word "gracious" comes to mind when describing the hosts in the family-run business. Lovely breakfast served in a beautiful setting.

There is so much that is just so good about the Adria House setting. Its in an excellent position close to the centre, excellent eateries - but also in the more secluded area of Calton Hill and Royal terrace. The building has been really well preserved to maintain the genteel atmosphere of an Edinburgh town house. Our room - room...

Adria House was delightful! Eddie and Maria were extremely accommodating, friendly and helpful. They were flexible with our checkin and gave us some great recommendations for things to do in Edinburgh. The room was very spacious and had a true Victorian vibe to it. Eddie also prepared a great English breakfast each morning. The location was also very central, only...

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here and wish it had been for longer. Great accommodation and excellent breakfast. Couldn't recommend it highly enough. I slipped on the ice on the way in and the kind woman on duty helped me with some first aid. The room was large and the bathroom was very romantic- I was sorry my wife wasn't...

We stayed for a total of 3 nights in September, topping and tailing a Rabbies tour of the Highlands. On our first night we were right at the top of the building - beware there are a lot of stairs to climb so may be not suitable for those with mobility issues. The room was lovely, spacious, with a HUGE...

We chose Adria House on the recommendation of a British friend and were happy with the choice. Our room was large and comfortable and the en-suite bath was large enough to have both a tub and a stall shower. Eddie and Maria who own the place are extremely personable and helpful. Breakfast was fine. Two possible caveats: (1)if you walk...

Adria House is different from other hotels that my family and I have visited. It is run by a passionate brother and sister team who really make sure you enjoy your stay. The room is spacious and clean. The hot and tasty breakfast gave me and my teenage nephew plenty of energy for our morning visit to the castle and...

Perfect location if you want a quiet spot but within close proximity to Edinburgh city centre, Leith, Royal Mile, Waverley, Holyrood and many more. Calton hill is directed immediately behind the house, and has stunning views. The area felt very safe at all times of day. The guesthouse was beautifully decorated and also very clean and light, the room was...

We found the Adria House to be within walking distance of everything we wanted to see. They gave us great suggestions of where to start with exploring Edinburgh. They packed a wonderful takeaway breakfast for our early morning departure.

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The family-run Adria House offers charming, comfortable accommodation and good value for it's central location. It is within easy walking distance of the main bus and train stations and also near many of Edinburgh's principal cultural, historical and retail landmarks. Situated on Calton Hill within a UNESCO World Heritage Site and once a fashionable society house, the Adria House embodies much of the Georgian architecture and decorative elegance associated with the period found within Edinburgh's New Town. ... more   less
