We spent three nights here while touring the area. The location was not as close to attractions as I thought it would be, but taxis were not so expensive as in larger cities. The staff was accommodating when they could understand you. Many of the staff were from Eastern European, not a Scot on site! The breakfast, which was provided...

Stayed here earlier this week with my sister, to go to John Barrowman's concert in the Playhouse. Hotel is in prefect location just across the road from Playhouse and some very good restaurants in area. Twin bedded room was very clean and quiet as it looked out on to the back car park. We both had a great nights sleep....

This Edinburgh City centre hotel is well situated at the top of Leith Walk and handy for tourists the rooms are spacious not big but clean and well maintained I had a room on the 6th floor which in its own was quiet no outside noise. The biggest problem was when you walked along the hall and in the room...

I travelled with my wife and some friends to Edinburgh and unfortunately it was the Edinburgh marathon so a lot of hotels were booked. We found the Holiday Inn Express, however ,right in the heart of the city. When we entered and asked for rooms we were told that there were two available for us but we would need photographic...

I have stayed at this hotel twice on business. The first time, I had a not so great experience. My room was right by the breakfast room and I was woken by clinking cups, glasses and plates at about 6am. Not great, when I had a working day to do! The second time, I explained my previous visit to the...

This hotel is in a great place for the new town and is a stone's throw from the last tram stop, making it a very easy 35 minute journey from the airport. It was good value - a group of 6 of us stayed for two nights at a reasonable rate for a city centre hotel and found excellent restaurants...

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
