Hotel is in an excellent location for exploring the city and also for anyone attending a show at the Playhouse. However, the walls are papar thin! Both rooms on either side of our room had guests who were obviously business men/women and who were up early making calls (from 5am). We could practically hear every word they said during their...

This is my first time abroad and there are definitely some differences between American and Scottish hotels. Most are minor. The room was very clean and the desk staff were very friendly. The breakfast had a great variety of items: cereals, muffins, toast, yogurt, fruit, scrambled eggs, sausage, "bacon" and beans. I put bacon in quotations because it's not what...

Stayed for 3 nights, in a great location near major transport links, friendly staff, clean rooms. Less than a 5min walk from a tram stop. Included breakfast was a bonus! Excellent value. Loads of bars and restaurants around.

The hotel is in a busy section of Edinburgh. There is a small area to park behind the hotel with 10-15 spaces. If you need to park make sure you reserve a parking place in addition to your room. The size of the rooms were typical of European hotels. It was clean and comfortable. We were able to find a...

Booked up this hotel because it's closeness to the train station and bars, wasn't disappointed was on a 10 min walk to train station and price was really cheap. At the time of visit was £100 less then hotels on the main road as you get off the train. So worth the saving for an extra 5 min walk. Rooms...

Positives - excellent position easy to find at end of Tram line or short walk from Bus route. Area has - Restaurants in abundance, Theatre and Cinema across the road. Short walk to Prince's St and surrounding Historic areas. Bar in house which is handy. You can not fault the position of the hotel. Negatives - Bed just a double,...

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
