Pros of the property itself - it's in a beautiful old church, the design is quirky and colourful. It's unique. Women's shower room is modern and spacious with a well lit mirror. Hair dryer provided, small but convenient to have. Beds are comfortable. Reasonably priced. Cons of the property - rooms are tiny and smell funny. As it is such...

I stayed at the Belford hostel for 2 nights. First, the location wasn't the greatest. Seemed safe, however was far from downtown Edinburgh. We took Uber for $4-5 pounds each way. The locals said to take the "black taxi" but the taxi was more expensive, especially if you leave a tip. This is an old church that has been modified,...

I stayed at a private room in this hostel in April 2017. Although the hostel looks really cool and fun, some of the essentials simply weren't there. For instance, though they advertise free wi-fi, it doesn't work in every room (including mine), so every time I wanted to go online I had to go down to the kitchen, which is...

Do NOT book through "Scotland Hostels". Poor communication and loads of errors. Plus hostel manager was not told we were a choir with children. This hostel is NOT appropriate for under 16s & does not normally take them. It's not cold now insulation has been improved. It's quirky with basic but comfortable beds. The bathrooms are pretty clean, no complaints...

I only write reviews when deserved and earned. Belford Hostel and in particular Sherralyn the Manager made my stay absolutely perfect. I was greeted with a warm welcome and provided with all the information I requested- mind you I ask a lot of questions! All staff were friendly and helpful and to me this is very important! Additionally the hostel...

So its 2017 and this is a developed country yet somehow they can't figure out how to heat a small room to a comfortable temperature. By that I mean you can see your breath!. You might as well sleep outside. But don't worry guys! They supply you with a blanket. Reminds me of my time in the Andes. But they...

Thank you for your comment. Had you seen Reception, we would have assisted you in turning on the heater. As the building is an old church, made of sandstone, and based in the cold country of Scotland, it can be a wee bit chilly, so we have spare heaters and duvets at Reception. As for the wifi, it is freely...

Too far away from the city centre Heating not working (it was freezing in the rooms) and staff was not able to provide further blankets. Rooms plus bathroom quite dirty. Only positive thing:The idea of locating a hostel in a church is quite cool and the design was special (something you don't see everyday)

Don't, I repeat, DON'T stay at this hostel! Arriving I was greeted by the rudest receptionist, I almost felt compelled to apologize for staying at the hostel. She couldn't take the money off my card, so I had to wander around until I found an atm. I don't care how long her day was, she's not fit to work in...

Thank you for your comment. The credit card machine was not working at the time of your check in, and the alternatives offered were not to your liking. The only option was to direct you to the nearest cash point - a map was provided, as requested. One often finds that the reasons people are unhappy with a business is...

Staying in Stockbridge & Dean Village

Neighbourhood Profile
Stockbridge & Dean Village
Just downhill of New Town and attractively straddling a river near the elegant Royal Botanic Garden, it’s small wonder that Stockbridge became one of the city’s first hip neighbourhoods. It’s now one of Edinburgh’s most desirable, though many bohemian touches have fallen away as its residents have matured and the area has gentrified. Some second-hand shops cling on, but mostly residents display refined tastes in basement bistros, gastropubs, coffee and antique shops, boutiques and delis and at the Sunday farmers' market. A pleasant ten-minute walk away, along a leafy riverside path beside the gurgling Water of Leith, lies Dean Village. This sleepy neighborhood of medieval half-timbered houses still retains much of the village feel it had when watermills plied their trade here. Beyond, the wooded riverside path feels even more remote as it climbs to the sculpture gardens of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.
