Gerald only has 2 guest rooms but it’s in the perfect location in New Town, everything within walking distance, (Shopping at Princess Street, Carlton Hill, Royal Mile, Arthur’s Seat, Edinburgh Castle, Circus Lane etc). My wife and I stayed at "Gerald's Place" in late March on the recommendation of a neighbour in Canada. We took the train from the airport to St. Andrew Square and walked the two blocks to Abercrombie Place where Gerald met us and took our bags. He has two bedrooms, one en-suite, and one with an adjoining bath. The rooms...

Gerald's Place is a lovely BB in Edinburgh. The rooms are spacious and very clean and everything is well thought out for the comfort of guests. There are books and DVDs to borrow, maps and guide books in the room and one hour walking guides to borrow. If that isn't enough Gerald is a font of knowledge on the best...

Gerald is the consummate host - charming, welcoming, witty. My room was comfortable and warm, the bathroom clean and well-equipped. Gerald's Place is centrally located and I walked everywhere from there. My stay here was wonderful and I would recommend it to anyone who puts a good bed, and a good breakfast, first when they are travelling.

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
