The hotel is in an excellent location, on the doorstep to the tram to the airport and the bus to the zoo. Within twenty minute walk of basically all main bars and places of interest so it was extremely easy to navigate and find our way back to the hotel itself. Negative points would be the fact the hotel is...

Thank you for taking the time to write your review. As we are a listed building, we cannot get lifts installed, but staff are always willing to help with luggage when asked, and if a lower floor is requested in advance, we always do our best to facilitate our guests. We are sorry that your complimentary tea tray was not...

When we arrived we found that we were unable to park the car outside the hotel as there was a Bus lane there. After driving around for a while trying to find another entrance we had to ring the hotel for help. The lady told us to pass the hotel, turn left and then turn left again. This was fine...

Thank you for taking the time to write your review on you recent stay. We are sorry that you found the staff unhelpful. This is a surprise as we often get praise from our guests in terms of the service and efforts provided by our front of house staff, but your comments will be passed on to the Reception Manager....

We stayed in The Ballantrae Hotel for two nights in February. The hotel is only a few minutes’ walk away from a tram stop, which can take you directly to the airport. The Hotel is about a 15minutes walk away from Prince Street and a 25minute walk away from The Castle. There are many pubs and café’s around the hotel....

Please accept our apologies for the issue with the window - this is now repaired. We hope to welcome you back to the Ballantrae in the near future. Kind regards, The...

Room ok clean enough but very dark not much light in. Pain to walk up so many flights of stairs especially with cases. No lifts! Hotel will benefit from this. Parking bad too limited spaces outside the hotel meaning about 4 cars at the most so if u can't get a space minimum cost about £15 per day. Some of...

Thank you for taking the time to write your review. The hotel was recently fully refurbished, but as a listed building we are unable to install lifts, however we allocate rooms on the ground floor when requested, and staff are always happy to help with luggage. We do not offer a cooked breakfast, but we do offer a large selection...

Location of the hotel was great, as we could walk within 20 minutes to 90% of the places we wanted to visit. Tramline right outside which takes you directly to airport. Room was good, clean and with a great view. On the downside, the cleaners in the morning were very loud right outside our room, obviously cleaning room beside us....

We booked this hotel at the extreme last minute because of travel difficulties. We weren't certain what to expect based on the price but couldn't believe it when we did check in. The front desk staff were super friendly and offered to help us get down to our room. The only issue really is the lack of a lift. This...

The hotel is in a very central location for all the of Edinburgh city centre tourist attractions and is helpfully at the end of the tram line from the airport. I could not recommend the hotel highly enough, if someone is purely looking for a central location from which to explore the city. With regard to the hotel itself, it...

Just returned from a short break here. Friendly service, clean large room with everything you need, we had a great view, great central location. Would recommend to anyone. Car park was a little tricky to find but we rang the hotel and he stayed on the phone to guide us.

Stayed with 3 friends for the weekend. Booked a quadruple room, had a double bed and a single which were nice but then had two sofa beds which was a bit disappointing. Thank you for taking the time to review the Ballantrae. We also have extra lamps available on request from reception....

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
