We chose the hotel because of the location. We wanted to be within short walking distance of George Street and Rose Street. The hotel is perfect for this. Of course it is also a great location for the royal mile/castle and princes street. As other reviews have mentioned The Huxley is the bar below the hotel where you have your...

You cannot beat the location if you want to explore the centre of Edinburgh, right next to the castle, at the end of the main high street, walking distance to train stations and lots of bars and restaurants. The Huxley bar which is part of the vote is a great place for drinks but I am going to focus on...

Thank you very much for taking the time to write a review of your recent stay at the Rutland. We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay and appreciate the constructive criticism you describe. We are baffled by the smell you describe but terribly sorry at the lack of hot water. This was a most unfortunate, untimely and unusual situation...

Stayed for two nights. Ideal location for all tourist attractions. Really friendly welcome on arrival and the room was clean and cosy with high level of decoration. We had cocktails at the Huxley and enjoying the lively atmosphere on one evening and then had a beautifully cooked steak in their restaurant.. Breakfast is in the Huxley and I felt that...

First class from top to bottom. We had 2 nights B&B with a dinner in the Kyloe restaurant on the first night and it was wonderful, only surpassed by the quality of the rooms in the floors above. The huxley bar on the ground floor was a great place to start the day with an excellent breakfast, and just as...

First class hotel in the west end of Edinburgh, easy check in and check out, A bit pricey considering all the other easy accessible hotels in the area, The Huxley bar was good for lunch and drinks and fairly good priced. The Kyloe restaurant upstairs was as good as it gets for food, the staff were excellent, all in all...

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your recent stay at The Rutland and we are thrilled you enjoyed your stay and took the time to enjoy the food in Kyloe and the drinks in Huxley. If you are looking for a smart hotel with great location in Edinburgh then look no further. After an exhaustive search for a hotel that was boutiquey, smart in a great location and reasonable priced I settled on the Rutland for my wife's 40th birthday getaway. Ŵe hired a junior suite (room 6) which had a castle view, it was...

We booked last minute for the Rutland, and were told it was the last room available (yet the biggest). Should have raised some alarm bells - and when we arrive we are taken to Room 1 which is set up for the mobility impaired. This was fine, but something I feel we should have been told at booking stage, as...

My girlfriend and I stayed in one of the serviced apartments, it was clean, nicely furnished and comfortable. There were a few stumbling blocks that prevent this from getting a 5 star review. The walk in shower was located next to the toilet which, without any sort of tray meant the water went all over the floor, fine if you're...

Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighbourhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theatres and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
