Lovely traditional hotel in a Central location. Was literally a stones throw from the Gardeners Cottage restaurant we were going to. The room was basic but clean and tidy. Lots of room; a double and three single beds. Ample hot water. Relaxed and hearty breakfast included in the very reasonable price.

This hotel is very deceiving from the outside, but once you get inside its a very warm and welcoming place, staff are very friendly and attentive. My room (I've stayed in smaller rooms at other major hotels) was nice and cozy, nice comfy double bed, coffee/tea facilities, very nice on-suite with a nice sized shower, in general a very pleasant...

The room was big and clean. Bed was comfortable. Bathroom was clean and the shower was hot. Staff weren't overly friendly, but that's perfect for me. There is no lift (and no porter) so it was a challenge to get my luggage to the second floor. I was also woken up by smells of cooking in the morning, so if...

Had a lovely stay here on Saturday night. Rooms was very spacious and clean. Didn't have the breakfast but that was just through our choice. Nice view outside to the garden. Lady on reception was very nice and made us feel very welcome. Will definitely book here again.

Stayed at the Abbey Hotel overnight on Saturday. Not the first time we have been here and as always had a good nights stay. Nice large, warm, clean room with a powerful shower. Breakfast was good and set us up for the return journey home. Will be back for a long weekend in April.

Stayed at The Abbey Hotel for one night. We had a family room. Check in smooth. Room was a little tired, but fine for what we needed. Clean and comfortable, breakfast was speedy but not rushed. Check out was seamless. I left my sunglasses in the room, the reception lady promised to mail this onto me, what a great prompt...

I visited this small hotel last week when going to the theatre nearby and found it be very nice and comfortable - very clean throughout and attractive decor. The location was also excellent and I would definitely recommend this for theatre especially. I found the breakfast very good and service was excellent. Friendly welcome and very helpful staff. Definitely consider...

I haven't stayed in the Abbey Hotel for a while because I haven't been to Edinburgh for a while. When I realised I was in need of a room in Edinburgh I had no hesitation in giving them a call. I was pleasantly relieved when they said 'yes', there were 2 rooms available. I said to my colleague 'We're in...

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
