Our room was excellent, it was spacious&clean. The only issue could be--it was not for us--that the hotel doesn't have an elevator. Otherwise, we appreciated very much both the old British Aristocratic House Ambiance and the very central location. Another point that made it a...More
We came across this gem when looking for a week's stay in Edinburgh. While it is a bed and breakfast; this property is beautiful!! Our room had 16 foot high ceilings and looked out onto the beautiful, back gardens. These gardens were easily accessible through...More
Spent the weekend here recently and was pleasantly surprised. The hotel is in an old house on a very quiet street only 10 minutes or less from York Place tram stop. My room had a lovely view of the back garden and was very clean....More
Absolutely tiny toilet room with no headroom whatsever and a very sharp toilet roll holder cutting into my leg on the right, followed by an acrobatic maneuvre to wipe ones rear end ending with a not so pleasant smell emanating from said small toilet room...More

Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The
top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
