Wonderful place to stay, everything is spotlessly clean. The room was warm and comfortable and en suite was sparkling. Here nothing is skimped, plenty of everything.Breakfast, delicious and served...

The hotel staff were really welcoming, friendly, helpful; the breakfasts were excellent. The hotel is in a lovely old Edinburgh terrace right by Calton Hill with its splendid monuments and views across the city to the Forth of Forth. It's in walking distance of Arthur's Seat,...

This was a real find. A lovely family run hotel in walking distance of the heart of the city. Shopping, theatres restaurants all with 10 minutes walk. Really comfortable the hotel has a lovely feel many of the original features remain. No lift due to the age of the building, but seriously need the exercise after one of the Abbeys...

We spent an overnight in the Abbey Hotel on Royal Terrace in Edinburgh, the location is excellent and the Lady on reception was so pleasant and allowed us to check in early. The room we had was on the ground floor and was huge and was big enough for a family. We had tea making facilities too which is always...

3 nights here. Very good location next to Caldon hill green area with outstanding city views. Not on a busy street and rooms in rear have full views of the green area. Very good breakfast staff. Very large room #9 with 15' ceilings but the windows don't open for fresh air so it can get a bit stuffy. Cost is...

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
