We stayed here for our company Christmas break and couldn't have picked a more charming place to stay. Edinburgh is wonderful, especially at Christmas and even more so when the sun comes out, and the Principal Edinburgh (formerly the George Hotel) is the icing on the cake. It appears to have been recently taken over by the Principal Group, and...

Lovely and warm rooms however it is my first experience for a hotel which doesn't stock foam pillows. They said they only have feather down which doesn't really cater for me. Also there was no shower cap and cotton pads provided in the bathroom.

This was our first stay at this hotel and it was really good. We were staying to celebrate our anniversary. When we checked in we had been given a free room upgrade, and two complimentary drinks vouchers. In the room we had a little slice of cake and a lovely little note celebrating our anniversary. It was lovely. The room...

We spend four nights in this fabulous hotel, beautifully decorated and very welcoming, the staff are incredibly attentive and on the ball. We look forward to coming back to stay and would highly recommend to anyone coming to Edinburgh

This is a fantastic hotel, rooms beautifully decorated , warm and cosy and spotlessly clean. Food in the restaurant is excellent but make sure you book as it is very popular. The other thing that makes this hotel stand out are the excellent staff, from the minute you arrive you are looked after, every department is so on the ball...

What a beautiful venue to hold a wedding, especially at this time of year with the Christmas decorations and lights outside. All staff were very attentive taking our coats when we arrived and letting us know where the wedding reception we were attending was being held. Our first stop was the bar, wow - 2 vodkas and 2 soft drinks...

Stunning hotel. Helpful and friendly staff. Great location 5 minute walk from the train station, great bars and restaurants on the same street as the hotel. Great stay would definitely recommend. Little tuck box in room was an original and nice idea.

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
