This was my 3rd visit and it was great as usual. It is in the most convenient position just around the corner from George St. Nice single room with small double bed and lovely spacious bathroom. Very clean and comfortable. The breakfast at Cafe Rouge is very nice, just wish they would give you a pot of tea instead of...

Perfect location, excellent rooms, moderate price. The catch is quite poor room service, bad towels, and possibility of not finding hot water in the shower one morning. Breakfast at the cafe opposite the hotel is quite a charm, would like many hotels do like that.

I stayed five nights at the Frederick House Hotel to celebrate my fiftieth birthday. The hotel's best characteristic is its location. It's in the city centre, walking distance to most sites, in a clean, safe area. Walking distance to restaurants and pubs, also. The hotel is clean and well-maintained, and the exterior has a lot of New Town character. The...

Stayed 2 nights and hard to fault really. I asked for a quiet room, they gave me one on the 4th floor at the back, perfect. I suspect though that the front ones wouldn't be noisy anyway, as the hotel looks to be totally refurbished, and the windows were PVC double glazed I think. Refurbished to a really high standard,...

I have stayed here once and thought the room was very good, 3 to 4 star but priced way below this level. Great location in the city for most events. Personally as someone who stays in many hotels I liked going over road for my breakfast in Cafe Rouge. You can sit by the pavement watching Edinburgh go to work...

Location was great for all round Edinburgh, decor was good condition, rooms were clean; requested late check out and they obliged with 12 noon! Staff polite, overall, having stayed in hundreds of hotels between us we would book again. Reception struggled to understand my request for two wine glasses; but did provide two odd ones. Left Luggage was self service,...

My wife and I stayed here for a 2 night weekend break, and we were very pleased with this hotel. It is in a very central location, so easy access to all the main Edinburgh attractions, although a down side to this would be lack of parking facilities-we came by train, so that did not bother us,it is about 15...

We stayed for two nights and our first impressions were very good. It is clean, the décor is lovely and looks to have been recently refurbished. Unfortunately, when the hotel was modernised I think they neglected to spend any money on new mattresses (you can feel the springs and they constantly creek). I feel this is a fundamental error as...

We only stayed 1 ngiht but were very impressed with this hotel. The room had everything you needed, with a hair dryer and tv mounted on the wall. The location is excellent, just being a short walk from Princes St, and lots of the main shops. Breakfast being included was nice, and Cafe Rouge is a stones throw from the...

Great value for money, modest but good rooms, can be tiny bit noisy depending on other (loud) guests, good free wifi connection, helpfull staff, breakfast across the street is simple but good. Highly recommended.

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
