This hotel is absolutely wonderful. Our plane arrived very early and our room was not ready and as my friend was sick with a cold they did everything in their power to make us comfortable. They set us up in a private lounge with tea, wifi and even a free Bloody Mary! Our room had a fabulous view of Edinburgh...

Wonderful Location between Old and New Town, Station nearby. Wonderful historical building with magnificent Dining room. Staff very helpful and polite, fast to respond. Free Wi-Fi, a bit slow, but working. Some issues are just difficult to understand, such as: -the only chest was a simple, open steel-structure, veiled with a transparent white cloth- very unusual for a Hotel of...

We stayed in what was defined as a Deluxe Queen bedroom (609) measuring 34 sq metres and with a view of the city. In fact, it was a tired room: the carpet needed replacing - it was badly ruffled and worn and always looked uncleaned; and the ugly black, scuffed doors of the wardrobe and tv and drinks cabinet -...

Had the pleasure of staying at the Scotsman while in Edinburgh earlier this month. What a treat. Excellent location. The staff was helpful, extremely nice and fun. Our room was fantastic. As has been said , the hotel was originally the offices of the Scotsman Newspaper. Our room was apparently someones office in a previous life. It was wood paneled and...

The Scotsman is in a great location (where isn't great in Edinburgh?). It is very close to Waverley station and just off the Royal Mile. The staff are friendly and welcoming and obviously proud of their hotel. We had a great room with very good facilities and a nice view over rooftops. The room was spacious with a lounge area...

This hotel once was the home of the Scotsman Newspaper. The building is very interesting and is located close to High Street. They offer a wonderful breakfast buffet as well as traditional Scottish food throughout the day. The rooms are clean, well serviced, and many over look the city or the castle. There are many restaurants nearby with lots of...

The location is ideal for both The Royal Mile and Princess St The service, quality of fittings, bathroom all superb We were unlucky with our room on second floor. Two night stay, first night there was a wedding and we were above the function room so heard the disco thud. Lovely big room beautifully furnished but mostly dark. Big arch...

We stayed in one of the turret rooms which had a delightful sitting area. The staff is out of this world and couldn't have been more friendly or helpful. If you arrive by train the hotel is only a three minute walk from the station. The hotel location couldn't be any better. The royal mile is only a block away,...

My wife & I stayed here recently on vacation (yes, we're a couple of Americans). The location is great, a block from the Royal Mile and with a lift puts you across the street from Waverley Station, making it a nice base for day trips. We arrived after an overnight flight and they were able to get us into our...

We visited The Scotsman for a night in mid-June after receiving a voucher as a gift. The location cannot be faulted, located between The Royal Mile and Princess Street. Central and close to transport links. We opted to leave use the park & ride outside the city centre but I believe the hotel offers discounted parking at a nearby car...

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
