Upon arriving, I was greeted with a bit of a building site. I was a little worried at first as no one had mentioned anything before our stay. Although this was going I found it did not effect my stay. The rooms were lovely and a very good size and the bath room as well. The staff are extremely friendly...

On arrival their was builders and decorators coming in and out of the building, hotel was a mess. Ladders and tools all over the floor, wet paint every where, skuffs all over walls and plastic wrapping on all the floors. Their was also a lot of problems with the room, tv in bathroom was broken, iron leaked water all over...

On arrival at the hotel there was a decorator sitting on the steps outside the door having a cigarette, I asked if we could use that door and he said that we could but be careful coz there's a painter up scaffolding behind the door. When we got to our room the window was open and the tatty frayed blinds...

Stayed for 2 nights. Lots of building work and decorating going on which was a bit of a nuisance. We paid 110 a night for single rooms , the room was small and bathroom pokey. The sink tap appeared to be fitted backwards. The TV had a blue light on it when on standby which lit the room up like...

Stayed for just one very cold Edinburgh night and received a very warm welcome especially from concierge Jamie if I remember right 28.01.15. In the middle a refurbishment but did not affect quality of stay. Great room 205? overlooking street. Quality buffet breakfast.

Only 1* because they don't have a 0* worst hotel I've ever had the displeasure of even visiting! Charged £100 a night for their shocking "honeymoon suite" upon arrival at the hotel there was clearly building work going on in, making the hotel dusty, noisey and generally a mess! Which we had not been previously warned about but thought ok,...

We stayed for two nights at the Albany wanting somewhere nice and central for a weekend break. The quality of accommodation and service we received far exceeded expectations (we received a free upgrade) and the price we paid. The staff were friendly, the room spacious, well appointed and had all the nice little extras like a fridge and ironing station...

The Albany is in a beautiful building, on a lovely street, but I was a little disappointed with our stay there overall. It is very conveniently situated for the station and Edinburgh's centre. When we stayed in January it was undergoing some well-needed redecoration but we experienced no disruption to our stay as a result of this. The staff were...

We booked for this weekend using Agoda who were brilliant. Upon arrival, we discovered a noisy builders site and were slightly worried. The receptionist was very nice and checked us in albeit without an apology for the appearance of the hotel. We were then promptly taken to a room in the basement area. It felt very dungeon like. We opened...

Initially shown to a room on the top floor which was very nice but discovered that the shower was not working (recent/ongoing refurbishment teething problems I think). The receptionist came up to try and get it working with but couldn't so he moved me to another room on the ground floor with no fuss. This was equally and nice and...

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
