Stayed in the outstanding Heriot suite. Everything in the room was just perfect - atmospheric, spotlessly clean and well equipped. The bathroom, with its big freestanding bath was a highlight, but the sitting room has a gorgeous layout for breakfast, and the comfortable four poster bed couldn't have been better. We parked at the sister hotel, Prestonfield House, where the friendly and efficient staff arranged a complimentary taxi to the Witchery, while we waited in the lounge. Check in was painless, and we were shown quickly to our beautiful suite. The champagne was chilling when we arrived, and was quickly pouted! We ate breakfast in the Witchery, with great local produce (huge portions!!!) before checking out - being able to leave our bags in the room to collect later from reception meant we were able to wander edinburgh freely. Another quick, free taxi back to Prestonfield rounded off a fantastic stay at the Witchery. An absolutely decadent treat, but it honestly could not have been any better.

was up in Edinburgh for the wife's birthday and managed to get a booking for this well known restaurant right by the castle only because of a cancellation. everything about it is beautiful from the location and setting to the castle dungeon interior...service was just right as expected and the food was special. didn't use the secret garden but that's for next time as we will be back. comparable to castle in the west of irelands restaurant we ate in once ... a night to remember...

Stayed 2 nights in the 'inner sanctum', ate room service breakfast, restaurant breakfast and dinner both nights (one in main restaurant and the other in secret garden restaurant, which serve the same menu). Overall, we very much enjoyed our stay at the witchery. The central location is perfect for exploring the city, the hotel suite amenities were excellent and the staff were very helpful and accommodating. Due to its situ/size there's no hotel reception/lounge/bar, which is often a useful feature during check in/out and when wanting to relax in the surroundings. Not much can be done about this but is something to be aware of if you usually enjoy relaxing in lounges and bars in the evening. The inner sanctum takes up the entire first floor of the main building; it is spectacular and we would HIGHLY recommend. Considering its on the main street, spitting distance from the castle entrance, there is very little noise pollution due to the windows that are sealed shut. This does mean there's a lack of fresh air which during the summer i think could be stifling, We made use of the fan provided even in the middle of winter. There's a usb charging point next to one side of the bed, but not the other, so could do with adding that to save one person having to crawl under the large bed side table to plug in a charger! In the main restaurant we were severed by a very kind and friendly Scottish man who told us some interesting facts about the origins of the ingredients and about Edinburgh city. The full scottish breakfast was great, best black pudding I've eaten. For dinner we tried the oysters (again, best I have eaten), steak tartare, scallops, halibut, steak, and shared venison wellington. It was all great quality, helped down by some great wine and cocktails. We had bottles of the Malbec/Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir - both were fantastic! The only dish we were disappointed in was the dauphinoise potatoes which accompanied the wellington; it was more a potato fondant as it was dry and not consistent with 'dauphinoise'. As there was only a light jus to accompany the potatoes and pastry wrapped venison, the overall feeling was one of a dry mouth. Covid: We found the sanitising of the hotel room key farcical during check in because everything else during our stay was handed to us directly, hotel maids came in, servers at restaurant etc. so please do away with that unnecessary charade. My partner is mask exempt and does not display this status by way of lanyard or badge for personal reasons. Sometimes this causes issues with staff serving us who challenge his lack of 'visible exemption' but the level of treatment and service by staff was respectful and accommodating. We felt comfortable during all of our interactions with staff, so thank you. This hotel and restaurant can be considered a luxury expense but on balance I would describe it as value for money because of the incredible experience, quality and level of comport you enjoy here. We shall return again in the future!

No other Edinburgh hotel can match The Witchery for its location, being almost next door to the Castle. Excepting a few niggles, everything else about the hotel is also of the highest standard. Let's get those few niggles out of the way before concluding with all that is good. The reception staff we encountered were not quite up to the standard needed for a hotel in its price bracket. The welcome provided was a little lacking - more efficient than warm. The waiting staff were, however, a generally very pleasant bunch (and no less efficient). The food they served was delicious and provided in a wonderful setting. Our room (The Heriot) was spacious and an enchanting place to be. It has to be said that the bathroom is more of a triumph of design than of function - trying to have a shower without drenching every surface is near impossible. I also note that our towels smelt of cooked food. Perhaps they are stored near the kitchen before being put in guest rooms? Our bed was very comfortable, with enough cushions and pillows to equip the next World War of pillow fights. The Witchery is a lovely place to stay, eat and drink and a one-of-a-kind Edinburgh experience.
