We thoroughly enjoyed an meal in the delightful surroundings of the secret garden. The food was delicious and the set menu at £36 was extremely good value.,the staff were attentive without being intrusive.

Stayed at the Witchery as part of a birthday celebration. Ate dinner in the Secret Garden. Very atmospheric, although I did find the food a bit of a let down in fine dining terms (not that Im an expert!) Wouldn't really want to stay there for more than a night though, but that one night? ... you'll be amazed, and... More

I have mixed reviews about my experience here. I went for dinner with my friends and having booked the Festive dinner menu we found that we were only getting a choice off the a la carte menu which was more expensive (not a major issue regarding the price more that we liked the festive menu choices more). All the food... More

We booked to eat here weeks ago, we were 3 ladies on a weekend break, and Wow! So worth the wait! The food was absolutely fabulous! The staff were lovely, friendly and attentive. We sat downstairs in the secret garden, its beautiful. Prices are reasonable and next time we visit Edinburgh we will be back! :)

We came here just after we got married in 2006 and stayed in the Sempill Suite. That wowed us enough for us to revisit on our fifth anniversary in 2011 when we stayed in the Inner Sanctum which was just as amazing. We've just returned from our latest visit for our tenth anniversary. This time we stayed in the Turret... More

We enjoyed a fabulous lunch at the Witchery this weekend, thanks to a gift voucher from family. Very atmospheric setting, cosy and friendly. Great menu and wine list, food was amazing, we had Lamb en croute it was delicious, as was my dessert of Kir royale sorbet. Very helpful staff. My only gripe would be closeness of tables, you can't... More

Wonderful setting and hope to give it another go. The menu was varied with plenty of choice. We shared the Lamb Wellington which was out of this world. The service seemed a little inconsistent. I marked it five as the waiter we eventually got was very friendly and efficient but the key word was eventually. Will want to try the... More

I have mixed feelings about this one. We made our table reservation a day in advance, so that is why we got the worst table - right at the place where all the waiters stand. So the whole time there were waiters standing literally half a meter away from us, observing everything we do (and waiting at my chair for... More

Myself and partner stayed at the Witchery hotel, Herriot room last weekend. Wow, wow, wow. What a beautiful room reached by a stone winding staircase, decadent, steeped in history, with fabulous theatrical bathroom and stand alone bathtub, super comfy 4 poster bed & all enjoyed with a complimentary btl of champagne. I didn't want to leave the room but alas,... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
