We stayed at the Caledonian for 1 night towards the end of our honeymoon as a treat. While the hotel is lovely, the staff are extremely pleasant and the location is wonderful - we still couldn't quite get over the cost for what you get. £260 for 1 night - and that didn't even include breakfast. Even though this isn't...

Stayed here for two nights, overall the hotel was excellent however we did experience some issues which I wouldn't expect from a hotel of this star, such as cleaners not closing the door following their service, luckily nothing went missing, creaking bed albeit comfortable, coffee machine stopped working at the end of stay

I would have ordinarily given this place an easy five stars. The location is perfect - just at the end of Princes Street, easy for the shops, Castle, Murrayfield, restaurants, City centre, trams, train etc. Really good. And the rooms (ours was anyway) were really quiet despite being in the middle of the city. The staff are superb - Willie...

My wife and I stayed at the Caledonian for the European Rugby Cup Final weekend. We had booked this a year prior (whilst in Lyon for the previous finals) and were really looking forward to it. Nothing was too much trouble for them and, even though we arrived early, they took care of our bags and even moved them up...

Beautiful building, lovely restaurant but food is expensive. The hotel room was very expensive for what it was. The room was small and the bathroom a little tight too. Nice view to the castle. Very central - at the end of Princes Street. The spa was small - small pool; the sauna was down slippery stairs - not ideal. Been...

Very welcoming staff and lovely room although we seemed to be opposite a store and so there was activity early in morning. Apart from this small thing everything was perfect and we would certainly use this hotel again.

Beautiful and well-appointed hotel with pleasant and friendly staff. Close to many attractions. Quiet rooms and very comfortable beds. Would stay there again in an instant. Easy to walk from there to most areas worth seeing.

We visited the bar last night and were served up a treat in cocktails - caipirinha, cosmopolitan, whisky etc. The team - Alan, Lee and Mattia - certainly knows their art, very knowledgeable, engaging and generally pleasant chaps. See you again soon!

Wonderful venue. Have been staying there for 30 years long before the Waldorf makeover and branding. Since our last stay, it's lost 10% in certain areas. The bathroom has no mat for the shower and is very slippy. The breakfast is not quite as happening as in previous years. Needs a team leader instead of several youngsters simply smiling. The...

We booked in for 2 nights stay prior to our departure. The staff were excellent from the moment we arrived. The attention to detail was obvious in all aspects of the running of the hotel. The location was perfect for sightseeing and shopping. I would definitely book here again, and recommend to family and friends.

Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighbourhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theatres and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian, or the "Caley" as it has become affectionately known among Edinburgh folk, was and still is the epitome of style and excellence. The large, rose-coloured Permian sandstone facade, quarried in Dumfries, dominates the skyline of the city's west end. The hotel has not only remained a focal point for more than one hundred years, but a symbol of the very best of Scottish hospitality. The Caley's pivotal position at the very heart of Edinburgh has always been its greatest asset. Created out of the 19th century railway boom, the five star hotel is looking to the future with confidence and pride in its ability to keep pace with the times. The hotel's reputation is as justified now as it was when the hotel first opened its doors in 1903. ... more   less
