We stayed in number 3 Shandwick place this Easter. It really is a lovely flat with lots of room. I thought it was clever photography but it really does have a very big living area. The flat is right in the middle of Edinburgh; perfect for sight seeing. The bedroom and bathroom are also a good size. When we arrived...

Although the hotel appears to be in a good location the road works make it impossible to get here in any other way than walking. The staff isn't helpful and the rooms are dirty and smell. The so called breakfast is a bag with a roll and stale cereal. There are cleary better hotels in Edinburgh, don't waste your money

After a long, long flight this was a great place to stop off and take a rest. Located at the foot of the Royale Mile - it was the perfect location to see both sides of the city! Shared bathrooms were clean, and great for budget seekers or backpackers! One critique - it was a little difficult to find. One...

I stayed here in july The location was very good, we could walk to everywhere, and the room was large enough, but we had view to a hill of trash at the back of the hotel. It was funny to see the seagulls eating the garbage.... The parking was difficult, but it is porbably the same everywhere because of the...

I booked this hotel in Nov 2010 for a concert in june 2011 and was informed of a double booking via email 6 months later. Was offered lesser acommodation much further away from desired location. Was not given a reason for double booking or offered any other alternatives. TERRIBLE customer service. Got a refund after they had had my money...

Clean, convenient, that's the only good things about it. Very depressing, seems to be more like a homeless hostel. The one staff person was doing his best but it was his first night (I expect they have a high staff turnover). Holes in the sheets. No sign on the door - no sign even once inside. Feels like a speakeasy,...

I wasn't expecting much when I booked a few days at the Shandwick, especially after some of the negative reviews. However, I have to say that we really enjoyed our stay. We had a suite/apartment which consisted of a kitchen, separate bathroom (with tub!) and then an enormous room that contained two double beds, closet, tv, and lounge chairs...and there...

If you are going to Edinburgh, want to stay close to city center and are not too plump in your pocket, this hotel is for you. It is well-situated, clean, not noisy and excellent communication from the airport. Service is very pleasant as well. There are only two small "buts": some rooms face nothing but wall some 5 cm from...

I was very pleased with my stay at the Shandwick. I am from the United States, and stayed there in September, 2010. I had a single room with a shared bath - that I had prepaid for on Expedia. But, there was no one on my wing, so no one else ever used the bathroom while I was there. The...

Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighbourhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theatres and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
