*Stayed at the Apex Waterloo for 9 nights from the 29th of March 2015, where we had a superior room on the 9th floor. The room itself was perfect, really comfortable bed, great shower and separate bath, stocked daily with toiletries and change of towels. *Also had goodies (pringles, Scottish shortbread biscuits and jellybeans) put with our packets of teas,coffee's...

Great location for station, princes street, and main sites. Hotel was taken over by Apex and redeveloped. Frontage looks grand, and the reception area, bar and breakfast area have been redecorated well. Other areas of hotel are more garish, with black and pink themes. Standard and superior rooms basically the same. In superior you get a robe and bottled water,...

I was very close to giving this hotel a full five. Super location in the centre of the city, close to Waverley train station and Calton Hill. From the airport you can get a tram to St Andrew Square, from where it's a short walk to the hotel. Receptionists are welcoming and very helpful. We were able to check in,...

This place was more than I expected. The location was really wonderful and the train station is just 50 steps away (don't worry you don't hear the train). The hotel has a full bar, restaurant, spa, pool and workout facility. I was really impressed! The only negative that I had was the room. It was small but well thought out...

Just returned from a short break. Lovely hotel excellent service. Eggs Royale to die for and fantastic staff in the restaurant. The spa was nice and relaxing. This hotel would have rated a 5 if the room had not been so cold and we were unable to warm it up via the air conditioning unit. Very convenient for the train...

When we arrived at the Hotel, we were offered an up-grade for a £20 charge, room was beautiful, and, bathroom with sky light just wonderful, excellent staff, restaurant first class, shopping on your front doorstep, but, quieter location, short distance to Carlton Hill, which is also gorgeous on a sunny day. A bonus that I was proposed to in Edinburgh,...

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
