We arrived and got checked in fine - it was well organised for adhering to Covid rules too - and were given room 603 on the top floor. When we got to our room we were so disappointed - there were marks all over the walls which we thought was really poor considering it was meant to be a Club Room, and there was also no bath. We were so disappointed that we went to reception to tell them, and the woman that dealt with the issue was brilliant. She apologised and after speaking to her manager she gave us a room with a River View which also had a bath. This room was amazing! Very spacious, clean and well kept. She also gave us a ÂŁ20 voucher to use since this room was ÂŁ20 cheaper than the Club Room. We were so appreciative of this and thought this customer service was great!
The rest of the hotel was also beautiful and clean.
We ate in the restaurant at night and the food was fantastic!
Overall I would return to this hotel but I would definitely only pay for their cheaper rooms as I feel we got a much nicer room for a better price.
The location of Malmaison Dundee was absolutely perfectly located for both Dundee Train Station and Caird Hall, both being within 3/4 minutes walk.
The hotel itself inside is quite dark as that seems to be a running theme of Malmaison Hotels, but having never stayed in one before, I didn’t know this.
We had booked a standard twin (Room 519) on a Bed & Breakfast basis.
The room itself was perfectly ok for what we needed as we were pretty much in and back out again for dinner and then straight onto the event. There’s some great air con in the room as it was pretty warm the weekend we visited and the room was pretty stuffy. The twin beds themselves were super clean and extremely comfortable with crisp white sheets and a really cosy mattress and a snuggly duvet. Perfectly located TV to watch in bed too. The only thing I would add here is the bathroom is very dark !
Breakfast the next morning was absolutely delicious ….. choice of continental breakfast and cooked breakfast if you wished and help yourself to tea and coffee. The tea is from a machine and was dreadful. Much prefer it from a pot.
All in all a pleasant stay.
We booked a suite for a treat and it was a lovely space with a large bathroom, bedroom and a lounge area. Tea and coffee making facilities were provided along with plenty of towels and bathrobes with slippers. We had drinks in the bar later in the afternoon and the bar staff (in fact all staff we encountered) were welcoming and friendly! Lots of COVID related signage, hand sanitiser stations and all staff wore masks which was reassuring. We didn’t eat at the hotel so can’t comment there. A little pricey for what you get, but nice for a treat.
A minor point but something I often feel when staying at Malmaison hotels is they are stylish and cool on the surface but on closer look, need a bit of decorating and repair to the paintwork and furniture.
The service was absolutely outstanding and really sets this hotel apart from any others I have visited. Really friendly, helpful and genuine members of staff.
Great for tourists as across the road from local attractions
Only downside is there is no onsite parking, there is a chargeable car park across the road though
Once we were seated we were given a few minutes to browse the drinks menu before ordering 2 cocktails. Shortly after that we ordered 2 starters and 2 mains.
About 15-20 minutes after placing out drinks orders our starters arrived but we still hadn’t received our drinks. A few minutes later our drinks eventually turned up however, one of the cocktails arrived in a plastic bag with a straw pierced into it. Anytime I picked the bag up to drink it, the bag drooped meaning the straw was removed from the liquid and it was impossible to drink. I therefore asked that it be returned to the bar and poured into a glass like I was expecting.
The starters were tasty and warm but nothing to write home about.
We didn’t have to wait too long for our main courses however, when they did arrive the waiter didn’t clear away our dirty starter plates. A second member of staff came by a few minutes later and cleared the dirty plates away.
Whilst waiting for our mains to arrive we did become aware that 2 other tables sat close to us were also experiencing the same problem with starters arriving before their drinks, with one table having to chase up their drinks twice beeper they eventually arrived.
We finished our mains which again were nothing special and decided just to pay the bill and leave.
We had planned to stay for another drink and deserts but the poor service spoiled the evening so we went to McDonalds for a McFlurry instead.
Sort the service problems out and a 3* review at best.
1* for quality of food
0* for drinks
1* for environment
0* for service
0* for flair
Malmaison rooms are a little bit moody, as part of the boutique image, which is fine and the rooms are not always well lit, which can be a problem when in the bathroom!
I ate in the restaurant, as part of a large group and the service could have been a lot better! Chasing staff for wine and members of the group having to wait for their meals to arrive is not a recommendation! The breakfast the following morning was more served by luck, the guidance, it would have been nice to have been told where everything was and asked if I would like coffee or tea...I felt that I had to do the running to get served breakfast!
We were thrilled to learn the hotel is now dog friendly, although would be keen if this was extended to an area where food/drinks with the dogs could occur too.
We stayed in a suite on the 4th floor, with a beautiful view across to the Discovery. This was exceptional at night time too.
Our room was overall nice, however, I did notice the throw that is usually on the end of the bed was covering the sofa that was opposite the bed instead. I didn't think much of this until I sat on the sofa later and the throw moved, to uncover extensive staining on the sofa. It was too late in the evening to involve concierge but we did mention this first thing the next morning as we didn't want to take the blame of this (travelling with 2 dogs under 4lb, they are incapable of reaching the sofa height or any of the furnishings, but I suspect a large dog perhaps managed to)
We overall wouldn't let this put us off coming back again, especially because you can have dogs stay too but would be hopeful if any pre-stains were in the room that we'd either be alerted or not receive them.
We managed to have a fair sleep; choosing the suite meant we were off the thoroughfare of hallway traffic and not next to an elevator too so we will keep that in mind for future bookings.
We didn't opt for breakfast as we wanted to sit in somewhere and have the dogs join us, and didn't fancy sitting in the room to eat.
The bathroom was lovely but the bath was covered in glitter. I had brought Flash wipes with me anyway so was able to clean it before use, but think someone indulged in a Lush bath bomb before us.
We will look at coming back when possible.
