Cally Palace Hotel & Golf Course is celebrated for its comprehensive amenities, including a pristine golf course and a variety of leisure facilities. Nestled in a superb setting, the hotel's location earns praise, though its remote nature is noted by some. The rooms, spacious and comfortable, may lack contemporary touches such as USB ports. Opinions on value vary, with some guests finding the dining options reasonably priced, while others consider room upgrades costly.
Service is generally recognized as friendly and professional, despite occasional inconsistencies. Cleanliness is a standout feature, with meticulous maintenance throughout. The hotel exudes a grand and timeless elegance, even if some find the decor slightly outdated.

Detailed Reviews
Wow a beautiful hotel, scrupulously clean well maintained in absolutely stunning landscaped grounds.
Our room was huge with large windows and a stunning view. It was decorated in a very traditional manner in keeping with the age and style of the property. Ot was wuite too no loud noises from nearby rooms our room had two doors to enter do that meant no corridor noise at all. No noisy road traffic peace and quite. The food was consistently very good at every meal. The food was inclusive with the room rate, sometimes it can be a risky choice to stay DBB but it was definitely the choice of the majority if not all residents.
Service requires a special mention every person on the staff team was friendly and well trained. As far as I could tell there were no Eastern European short term staff everyone we came across seemed to be local. A special mention to the barman - ultra efficient, very helpful and friendly and he matched his interactions well to the guests and circumstances.
The countryside around the hotel is stunning, the huge golf course, the beautiful little village of Gatehouse of Fleet, woodland and forest walks of any distance right from the hotel car park, there is even a lovely sandy beach an easy two mile walk from the hotel.
If there was one thing I would recommend the hotel enhance it would be to extend the small gym and upsell a spa type of option. Although I must admit we did not use the gym and pool at all as we spent all our time walking.
Value is better than many 4 star hotels especially those in the Lakes. It seems travelling an hour north of the Lakes improves quality and value.
Would I stay in this hotel again - absolutely yes with no concerns.

The grounds are lovely and golf course contained within them. It is a unique location. The bedroom with balcony was spacious but rather drab. The bathroom was good with a proper sized bath. Water pressure was good in both shower and washbasin but cistern not good. Service in the dining room was very fast as the menu was chosen the day before so was ready for chosen dining time . Now for the negative. The food was a hit or a miss. I had lamb on the first night and it was all fat. I should have complained but I had lost my appetite by then for it had totally turned me off. on the second night we both had pheasant but it was bland and rubbery. On the third night I had sea bass and it was nice. For breakfast the bacon was like old leather on one of the mornings so we did not order it again. It was like bacon which had almost gone off, light brown colour and fatty. Despite being aware that this this was a special occasion for me there was absolutely no recognition of the fact. We were charged £10 for a bucket of ice. We certainly did not feel that the staff were welcoming when we arrived. The hotel is very badly needing a makeover and seems to rely on an older repeat clientele. I would not return.

Let’s start with the positives. The setting is superb. The Hotel nestles amidst some of the loveliest countryside in Dumfries and Galloway and if you just happen to be a golfer then you would probably regard Cally Palace as a form of paradise. The food is very good indeed. We had two lovely dinners (all credit to the kitchen) and enjoyed some rather nice wines (the Albariño and Shiraz were particularly good). And we did enjoy being able to walk from the hotel to the Cally gardens, the Cally woods and to the beach at Sandgreen (this last walk is a cracker). A pity then that the bedrooms in the Forest wing look so tired and that the reception staff appeared at times abrupt, unhelpful and unwelcoming. It almost seemed as if they felt their main role was to enforce Covid restrictions. We are a fully vaccinated, mask wearing, socially distanced couple and so struggle to understand why a hotel in a region with no hospitalised cases feels unable to hire out a putter or allow more than 4 people in it’s pool at a time. Incidentally we also fail to understand why Cally Palace operates a 3pm room entry policy even if the room is ready. Our request to move in earlier was met with a rather abrupt ‘no’. Friends arriving the following day were also denied early entry even though we know their room was prepared by 11am. Come on Cally Palace, you can do better!

Having had one holiday in July to this wonderful Hotel cancelled (along with four other holidays elsewhere), we finally arrived at The Cally on Friday 14th August. Our favourite room had been unavailable, but room 52 was a perfect substitute. The pandemic restrictions are well handled at no time were we concerned.
The staff were excellent, in particular Steven, Gary and young Ewen in the bar, Steven although was upset we hadn't noticed he had his hair cut whilst we were there. Then Carol, Janet and David in the restaurant. Janet was her usual whirlwind self-running hither and thither, Carol remained her calm peaceful self, and David well he is just David, although he did go out of his way to go out two nights and catch some haggis so that we could have some at breakfast, I think it should be offered as standard on their Cally Grill breakfast menu. Give that man a medal. Jacqueline was seen as normal in the distance running her eye over everything, making sure everyone was well looked after. There was minimal contact with reception this trip, but you knew they were there doing a sterling job if needed.
Sadly, all good things do come to an end, and it was time for us to bid a fond farewell, safe in the knowledge that we are back in November, then again Christmas and Hogmanay.

My husband booked a 2 night package directly with the hotel explaining it was our 25th anniversary. The room they gave us looked more like a dated lounge in a care home with single beds. This was rectified and they gave us the room my husband had asked for when making the booking. COVID restrictions meant we had to pre order dinner and agree a time to eat.We sat down expecting the waiter to greet us and ask what we would like to drink, instead our starter was placed in front of us and he was off. We eventually had to ask for a wine list. Our expectation of a leisurely, relaxed meal was gone. Literally after finishing one course the next one was on the table. After 4 courses we were in and out in an hour. Although the quality of the ingredients was good the food was lukewarm. At no point during the 2 dinners or breakfasts did anyone say is everything all right or can I get you anything else. We felt that the staff were desperate to get finished as early as possible and didn’t show any customer service at all. You would think under the circumstances they would be happy to be working and to give guests the experience they are paying for.
We certainly won’t be back.

This is a very dated hotel that needs to come into the 21st Century.
If you are into heavy old fashioned carpets, curtains and wall paper then you’ll love it!! Portraits of people from decades ago made me feel I was in a museum!
The bedroom was clean and a nice big bed but there were no pictures on the wall and although there was another sitting room adjoining the bedroom it too was sparse.
The toiletries were well below par… a couple of small tubes of shower gell and shampoo.
Some of the food was ok but there was a lot of similarities in the menu each day and the sorbet was tasteless.
Breakfast was also below par with not enough choices and the full Scottish lacked mushrooms and sausages were not of a good quality.
A half grapefruit was perched in a stainless steel pot that you would get in a greasy cafe.
On the plus side the staff were trying really hard and were friendly and helpful.
The location is stunning but the hotel does not take advantage of the surroundings as there are few comfy chairs for outdoor eating/drinking. As well as golf there are stunning beaches and plenty of places to cycle and walk.
The swimming pool is tired and the clientele ate definitely of the older generation.
A great shame as this could be a fabulous place to stay.

Great reception area at this wonderful location, plenty of parking outside, and a warm reception as we checked in.
Our room was tremendous; large comfy and warm. With a bathroom, shower and bath, TV, wi fi, coffee, tea and biscuits, superb.
The seating areas are full of splendour, large and colourful, with large paintings on the walls, open fires, very cosy and welcoming.
The bar is located separately by the conservatory, but once you have ordered your drink Gary or Margaret will kindly bring the drinks to your table for you. Very pleasant and helpful staff.
Breakfast has a good choice of fruit juice, cereal, fruit, yogurt, porridge, smoked haddock, or full English breakfast. Plentiful supply of toast, tea, and coffee pots.
The evening meals are generally superb, a good choice of three and four course meals over the weekend. Except when we ordered a fillet steak and requested it rare, it arrived well done. We checked with Janet, our waitress, who returned the steak to the kitchen. A few moments later the second steak arrived, fairly well done too! My wife was not very happy at all, neither was I as there was a £13 supplement!
Otherwise, a super meal from start to finish. Thank you chef and the waiting staff.
One day over our weekend stay we were back at the hotel midday and ordered lunch. Expecting a little lunch time sandwich type snack, we were unprepared for the size of the serving that arrived. It was enormous, fresh and delicious. Just managed to finish it all, it was so good I didn’t want to waste any of it.
Very handy indeed that there is a pool, and, ok, a small gym; treadmill, cross trainer, rowing machine, exercise bike, leg machine and a small rack of dumbbells. But certainly enough to help burn off some of those extra calories consumed elsewhere!
And of course the eighteen hole golf course if you are so inclined, not me tho.
There are lovely walks all around the wonderful countryside outside of the already large grounds of the hotel. Lots to see and do all around the area.
When checking out, we discovered that we were not charged for the hiccup with the steak, not so bad after all. Thank you, Cally Palace for that.
Excellent weekend throughout, thank you chef and all the staff.

The hotel is in the middle of nowhere with a long drive up a narrow road to get to the hotel.
Our room was on the top floor which was upstairs but very easy to climb with low steps. Our room consisted of a sitting area, a bedroom and toilet/bathroom. All rooms were very large and clean.
We had lunch in the conservatory on the first day. Food was amazing and the staff very friendly. It was table service so we never had to leave our seats at all.
Our evening meal was lovely and the wine was also of a very good quality. The waiting staff were friendly and always asking if we needed anything. A prefect dining experience, we were very impressed.
We went into one of the many sitting rooms after our meal and once again the waiter came to ask us what drink we would like. The service was very quick, very friendly and the drinks of a very good quality.
We also liked the fact that all staff and guests wore masks. One evening a resident was going to her bed and forgot to put her mask on. The waiter stopped her and asked her to put it on, she was very apologetic and did so. It’s good to see the hotel takes covid so seriously.
I have to say that this hotel was probably the best kept old hotel we have stayed in for many years. Each of the sitting rooms were in immaculate condition. A lot of old hotels can look very tired and in need of a paint. This hotel looks like it’s just been painted from top to bottom. The seating and tables in all areas are clean and comfortable.

At first glance, the original exterior of the Cally Palace is stunning, in a lovely setting. Impressive entrance hall and two guest lounges with beautiful ceilings and furnishings. The pool was clean, with excellent shower and changing facilities. But on the other hand, locating our destination wasn't simple : a hotel sign the end of the driveway would be a great help to strangers! The entrance foyer itself is an indicator of how difficult the building is for even minimally mobility-challenged visitors. Staff at reception were polite but offhand, made no offer of help with our luggage despite the unavoidable stairs. Little did we realise how difficult it would be to reach our upstairs room in the Forest Wing without a lift. The king room and bathroom facilities were clean, warm and comfortable, though walls are paper thin and there was not a single USB charging point. Fortunately we eventually discovered electric sockets unhandily located very low down on the wall beneath the bedside tables to charge phones, tablets etc. The dining room was spacious, with nice white table linens - shame about the paper napkins. Food was generally all right, dinner menu the same for our three nights there. Don't expect anything much in the way of green vegetables with your main course, let alone the salad starter which was mostly chopped tomato and cucumber. And don't even think about requesting more than the one paltry roll and one pat of butter each with your starter! (We were told we'd have to wait 15 mins for more rolls to be baked.) Breakfast buffet was good, but the option of some rolls or bread would be nice, in addition to the standard toast rack that was brought. Again 1 pat of butter per person was the standard ration on each table. The hotel may be 'in transition' after a change in management, but such petty meanness is inexcusable in a supposed four star establishment, charging four star prices!

This is our second golf society trip to this lovely hotel and course. The hotel, food, the setting and the golf course were lovely. The staff are very friendly and attentive. Our rooms were very clean and comfortable. The shower was very powerful. We had the table d’hote menu, which had 4 courses and a good choice. The bar is well stocked and we felt the pricing was very reasonable and not much more than you would pay in a local pub. The staff were very helpful and accommodating and even set up our group with a room with large tv to watch the FA cup final.
The golf was very enjoyable, the course was testing and was in pretty good shape.

We do not know about walk in showers but there are free standing showers. Have been in many rooms but don’t think there are any balconies. Give the hotel a ring to confirm exactly what they have.
The local pub I think it's called the ship Inn
We had a lovely evening meal
I always ask the staff where I'm staying for good places to eat
Suggest that you contact the hotel direct to get an answer (01557 814 341)
Sorry I don't know but the staff are extremely knowledgeable, and I'd be surprised if they weren't able to help you.
As per another reviewer this probably too late for you but yes the Cally can cater for kids from either the fixed menu or the kids one, they will adapt for your needs
